Every time someone [positively] mentions Strange the Dreamer my heart skips a beat. Will always LOVE the duology.

Fiction: The Mists of Avalon (MZB), Lolita (Vladimir Nabokov), Putney (Sofka Zinovieff), My Dark Vanessa (Kate Elizabeth Russell), The Bell Jar (Sylvia Plath) and The Colour Purple (Alice Walker) are all novels that have hit me hard with their themes, messages, writing and/or sheer emotionality.
Non-fiction: Darkness Visible (William Styron), Alex & Me (Dr Irene Pepperberg).

For me a powerful book was to Kill a Mockingbird.

My powerful book list would be: The Secret History, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, Flowers for Algernon, The Grapes of Wrath, The Great Gatsby, A Little Life. So many great ones.

One powerful fiction that I can think of is "Flowers for Algernon".

I read Legendborn just this year and felt it was really powerful. It had so many simple lines that showed the imbalance of POC and how they live in America. On top of that it shows the desperation of families from the time of slavery. It was just such a good book, I loved it!

So many good ideas here. I've read some really sad and moving stories. Putting yourself in someone else's shoes who is so different from u is indeed eye opening for me too.

Great video! My take would be the Diviner series by Libba Bray, it a ya paranormal urban fantasy/ historical fiction set in New York in 1927. I just finnished book 2 and it's impressive how she addresses so many historical social behaviours as the main cast of characters have a wide range of races, sexuality and believes. A lot of real events are referenced and affect the main characters and, as a non american, I found very interesting (and heartbreaking) to learn more about them (not that the rest of the world doesn't have it fair share of discrimination, sadly).

I haven't yet read it, but my girlfriend definitely feels The Book Thief deserves to be on this list. My pick would be A Man Called Ove.

I saw on one of your videos that you have not read LOR. You should read these books.
I am an old man who has read many fantasy books.
Here are some older series you should read if you want
1. Lord of Rings
2. Shannara Series (Terrie Brooks). Start with Sword of Shannara (20 Book Total)
3. Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (Stephen Donaldson).
4. Once and Future King ( TH White)

The Strange the Dreamer duology manages to change me every time I read it. And I’ve read it like five times now...

Powerful books are my favorite! Here are some just to name a few: Non-Fiction: The Buried (about Egyptian culture, history, and the Arab Spring), I am Malala, Little Princes (about child trafficking and fake orphanages in Nepal), We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed with Our Families (journalistic book about the Rwanda genocide), Nothing to Envy (journalistic book about North Korea),

Fiction: If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things (about appreciating the mundane), any Khaled Hosseini Book (he wrote The Kite Runner), Pachinko (about life as a Korean immigrant in Japan), The Icarus Girl (about walking the line between two vastly different cultures as a Nigerian-born UK citizen, told with a magical-realism style), Veronica (about the AIDS epidemic in the 80s), Map of Salt and Stars (about the Syrian Refugee crisis), The Shadow of the Wind series (about loving literature in fascist Spain), The Golem and the Jinni (about immigrants crossing cultural boundaries and finding common ground in New York), The Deep (about pregnant slaves thrown overboard on the crossing to the Americas and their mermaid descendants; about intergenerational trauma and grief).

Okay I'll stop!

Not a book per se, but Violet Evergarden is both beautiful, heart wrenching, and amazing.
It's an anime. You can stream it on netflix. I don't have netflix so I bought my own copy.
It's a bout a 15 year old girl who wants to find the definition of the words, "I love you, " as told to her by the Major, a defining person in her life.
Premise: At 15, she's a military veteran trying to integrate into civie life as someone who writes letters after having her arms blown off.
You should watch it.

I had to recommend Educated to my therapist because it was the closest I could find to my own story. 🙃
