I will never get tired of recommending Come Closer. It felt so realistic and I really got into the head of the main character that I felt everything she was experiencing. Such as well written book!

The Book of the Most Precious Substance is amazing, might be my fave read of 2022! I loved Come Closer too!

Hearing your thoughts on Stolen Tongues made me soooo happy, I'm glad that you felt the same way about the Native American aspect of the book. I was LOVING the book and then I got to the monster reveal and was like.. thats upsetting, but I pushed through (cause there are ways the whole thing could have been okay) but then another POC was killed and I was like seriously, there are so few POC's in this book why are they the ONLY ones being killed by this monster. AND THEN THAT STUPID AUTHORS NOTE! That was the worst part! Like it felt like a slap in the face.. He was trying to say he didn't do what he did...

Anyway, fun watching the vlog, glad you liked the other two!

I put Come Closer on my wishlist, had never heard of it before. What you said about Stolen Tongues totally put me off.

I've been feeling guilty about not finishing Stolen Tongues after I started it months ago and loved the prologue, but after hearing the only part I read is essentially the best part of the book, I'm more than happy to donate the book and get rid of it. His essay at the end sounds like the worst defense of himself imaginable though, ugh.

Yes I completely agree about Stolen Tongues. It hit the ground running and I was really enjoying it but it kept running and running and running for…what? From what? Where to? And the Native American exploitation was super uncomfy for me too.

I absolutely loved come closer! It’s the kind of book that stayed with me and really got into my head. The dream aspect was horrifying and every time I hear the pipes rattle in the night I get freaked out now 😅. So, so happy you enjoyed this as well.

I'm really looking forward to reading Crossroads! I read Come Closer in October and had a great time with it, I'm glad you loved it! The prologue in Stolen Tongues is SO GOOD and then after that the rest of the book is repetitive and boring and offensive. I don't understand all the hype around it but I'm glad I've been hearing more criticisms of it recently after only hearing good things for such a long time

I had similar issues with stolen tongues and the authors note. Not only that, but I just felt like it got kind of sloppy and not well written near the end.

Here is one of the poems it is a poetic interpretation of head of a dead young man painting by theodore gericault
Head of a dead young man
Beneath a canvas coarse and crass, the head of a young man upon a cushion soft and of care; feminine chin; upon the lower lip the blood of God; fine nose; hair of an infant here...and...down there; upon his front, the sublime illumination, that descends, intimately, as though of ivory flame.... ...when, of lavender and of rose, ascending vaguely towards the exegetic darkness, the offal; disclosed thus, profound and grave, an immense lesion, as though of a dolourous ulcer...from where all comes...where all returns....

House of Leaves was the worst book I've ever read. I'm a chicken and that book wasn't remotely horror.
