I used the infamous "banana phone" for a year. I ain't gonna lie, it was tough😅 But it might have been the best social media detox ever. Especially as this dumb phone is "smarter" than other dumb phones!

I just got rid of all social media except for youtube. And even that draws me in though.

I actually spent a month using a dumbphone on two separate occasions. It did break the cycle of distraction for me – but eventually I subconsciously compensated for that by procrastinating more on the computer while I work. Still a net positive.

Trust me, this is THE best system to beat the system. Worked for me. I used a dumb phone + wifi tablet combo.

- turn off irrelevant notifications
- turn on wifi only when needed. Keep it turned off when not
- put out of sight and train yourself to stop reaching it

I use my flip phone KaiOS as my primary device. I have a 2019 iPod touch and an IPAD Pro. I only use the internet/apps when I’m “working” as I work for an org that requires digital media content. I’ve done this for a year+. This works for me pretty well.

That was exactly my system, bro! My primary phone was, and still is, a dumb one (Nokia 3310). If I needed internet or a specific app, I'd power up the smartphone, do the task I needed to do, then power it down and put the son of the bitch out of sight! But then I realised I didn't need the smartphone at all and I could live without it, so I sold it, so now I just have the Nokia. I'm totally fine, lol! But then again, I'm not a content creator, lmao.

Been on a dumb phone for 6 months and got back to a smartphone because of my new job. Love your system and I'll give it a shot

- Use the Forest app to limit distractions during certain times, like when studying
- Charge it at night outside your bedroom
-Dont just uninstall distracting apps, like instagram- delete your account (not possible for everyone)

I disabled all the notifications on my smart phone so now it never rings.

That coffee cup looks very cool actually. I would buy one if you would sell tshirts cups etc.

I have been using my previous, now 6 year old smartphone with a prepaid sim-card. No social media, no games, only Whatsapp and some basic Google apps. That way I don't have anything to look at in many places and I don't recieve any notifications. But I still have an alright camera, navigation and a device to call and text. I also turned on battery-save mode to make it slower and last longer. No extra money spent, no struggling with typing, not distracting and still looks normal with other people.

I relate to this a lot because it's too hard to go back to only a smart phone especially if you have an Internet/social media addiction. You almost have to get rid of the smart phone completely in order to stop being glued to the phone. I am thinking about getting a dumb phone too so I can start getting shit done and stop worrying about what other people are doing.

Great take on this topic! I deleted all non-essential apps on my iPhone and silenced all notifications. For enjoying YT etc, I use my iPad only. It’s bulky, so much less tempting to carry around and check. My phone is now super boring, which is awesome. During study hours, I keep it upstairs on the charger, with only call notifications. This has really helped me, plus in 2017 I deleted FB and IG, which were big mind-sucks and comparison traps. Thanks for the great videos.

First off, I quit all social media in late March/early April except for YouTube, which I need for my website. Secondly, you don’t HAVE to have social media apps to still go to the websites to post. But, what people can do is delete all the apps you can on a smartphone, turn off the data and WiFi, turn off notifications except for calls and texts, and treat your phone like a dumbphone. At least that way you do have access to things like Uber in case of emergency. The other thing, though, is that smartphones are increasingly creepy regarding surveillance, etc. and we all should get rid of them.

I’ve never been on what’s app... I am proof that you can literally live without it!
