What are the Holy Days of Obligation?
Показать описание
The Holy Days of Obligation are the days that Catholics are expected to attend Mass.
We are expected to attend Mass on every Sunday, but there are also additional feast days that Catholics are expected to attend Mass.
This obligation is essentially in fulfillment of the third commandment to "Keep holy the Lord's Day."
In the United States, the Holy Days of Obligation are:
January 1: Mary, Mother of God
40 Days after Easter: Ascension Thursday
August 15: Assumption of Mary
November 1: All Saints’ Day
December 8: The Feast of the Immaculate Conception
December 25: Christmas (The Nativity of Our Lord)
The Feasts of the Epiphany and the Body and Blood of Christ are also holy days of obligation, but they have been permanently moved to the closest Sunday.
Every region and conference of bishops decides which feast days are celebrated as holy days of obligation. Vatican City, for example, celebrates ten holy days of obligation. This aligns with the full ten holy days of obligation in universal canon law which includes all of the above feasts, plus the Feast of St. Joseph (March 19) and the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul (June 29).
Are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday holy days of obligation?
Although they are very well attended, the celebrations of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are not holy days of obligation.
