It's not that a wave needs a medium, a wave "is" the medium. It's the medium in a perturbed state. A wave itself is nothing more than a concept, therefore a wave without a medium as a contradiction in terms.

Watched it without audio, but even so was a great set of visuals. Thanks so much! I've been teaching physics to 1st graders, so I'm trying to learn it myself first, and grateful for so many great online resources to learn on my own.

Non-mechanical waves also need a medium, it's called a field, like the electromagnetic field in which the lightwaves travel. Fields permeate the vacuum which explains why non-mechanical waves travel across vacuum conditions.
