This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2022 Honda Civic. For 23 years straight in Canada, it’s been the best selling passenger car and also one of the top three best selling cars in the US over the past 48 years. The new Honda Civic offers two engines, a 2L 4-cylinder matched with a CVT, 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. Our test model has the 1.5L turbo 4-cylinder with 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. That’s up 6 horsepower and 15 lb-ft of torque from the previous model. It comes standard with FWD, AWD is optional and there is no manual transmission available. The interior is refined, simplistic with a touch of elegance. The striking honeycomb mesh accent stretches across the dash from door to door hiding the air vents and creating a uncluttered design. Honda says, it focused on high quality materials especially on touch points. Materials were chosen for practicality including the centre console design to hide smudges and fingerprints. The Touring trim is where you’ll find the extra features like the bigger 9” touchscreen, 10.2” digital driver display, leather seats, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, wireless charger, power driver and passenger seats, heated rear seats and a 12 speaker Bose sound system which sounds great. The new Honda Civic Sedan has a clean and modern design with a low hood and front fenders. Standard 16” wheels, 18” on the top two trims. The Civic body structure is the most rigid in Civic history. The stiffer structure supports improvement in ride, handling and NVH ( noise, vibration, harshness). The new stiffer body also reduces the transmission of noise and wind. Honda says this new Civic has a simple and uncluttered interior design focusing on high quality materials especially on touch points. Materials were also chosen for practicality including the centre console designed to hide smudges and fingerprints. The Civic features a larger front grille and a bold LED headlight design. Gone are the sharp, angular exterior features, it now offers a simplified, clean and elegant design. The slimmer taillights and softer lines give the rear a sophisticated look.

My next car will be a Honda Civic Hatchback. I’ve had my civic since 2002, and I still love it. Twenty years and still great.

I own a 10th gen hatch and absolutely love it inside and out but this update is growing on me. The interior is beautiful in this 11th generation. I have also been impressed with the 11th gen hatch, particularly the Audi-inspired fastback look from the rear. I’ll be test driving one when they are available. As far as the 1.5 not generating enough passenger compartment warmth, I had no issues last winter when temps were -20F last winter.

I just bought a 2022 Touring and love it. Haven’t had a civic since 2013. I don’t know why people say this car looks “boring”. It’s modern and simple. Past generations of civics have always looked over designed and like a transformer. They looked like a typical new car a 18 year old would get when they first start driving. Very juvenile. This design is grown up. Looks more like an adults car. :)

Thanks for another great review! The maturing of the design is really encouraging and gives me hope the next Type R can be a car I may consider. The 10th generation was over styled to appeal to the tuner market.

Great review, folks. I think self-styled automotive "enthusiasts, " including myself, often underestimate the challenges of designing a vehicle like the Civic. A car that can be driven for five years or more without looking and feeling out-of-date. An economical vehicle that serves the missions of a daily driver and a long distance "tripper" equally well for a single driver, a couple, or a small family. Compared to such competing demands designing a vehicle aimed at a single mission is far less challenging.

The design of the new Elantra is undeniably arresting but its over-styled creases and bulges (a common feature of Hyundai's design language) suggest it's a descendant of a spaceship in a 1930's Flash Gordon movie serial. I couldn't agree more that the new Civic's design will age far better.

All in all, I think Honda has a winner in the new generation.

The Civic has become what the Accord was 20 years impressive car.

Great review! Really appreciate all the details you shared...and your honesty about the OD issue with the 1.5L turbo.

I have a 2019 Civic HB with the 1.5T and I live in Calgary. I believe that Honda tweaked the engine software since the 1.5 was introduced. The cabin has no problem getting warm in the winter. Overall the 1.5 has been a peach of an engine.

Oh and BTW though I love my hatch I'm the first to admit that its styling is, um, kinda busy.

Thank you two! Didn’t know about the previous oil problem. I never dealt with that in my 2016 Civic 🤙

I like how you guys dismissed the people saying 'quality went down' blindly. I hadn't ever heard that statement being made before that question either by the way. As owners of the last gen, I trust your opinion. Great review as always. Looks like Honda absolutely nailed it!

Honda needs to get rid of the Insight and make this as their hybrid.

Zack you echoed my exact comments from the day I saw this car. It totally looks like the Jetta from the rear.

Great review guys! Totally agree Honda brought in a very clean German design but I think it will age much better than the previous gen. With that belt line it looks quite large. Would love to see how it compares to an Accord 1 or 2 gens back.
