I went back to Graces F after this. Story is way worst, but gameplay is much more fun. It is WAY too challenging to go for the platinum though. Still my favorite tales though.

Did DLC make Tales of Arise worse?

Nope. It was still good.

Bersaria, Zesteria, Xillia, Xillia 2, Vesperia, Hearts R are my recommendations

The issue I've always had with the battle system of this game is needing to use the finisher/boost skills to push the larger enemies and bosses past 50% (and to kill them). To me, that takes away from what I thought the idea of these skills were supposed to be. Like a limit break you whipped out when shit got real, not just a flashy finisher.

I've been steadily chipping away at Arise for nearly 3 years now, The Series X version I've been playing tends to softlock on skits randomly forcing me to restart the game and work my way back to the same point where the skit can be triggered again and just hope it doesn't lock up. The lack of convenient button mapping controls on Console still drives me up a wall as well, the jump button outside of combat cannot be remapped so my in battle controls and out of battle controls use entirely different buttons. That paired with the pacing and a few character moments that felt like genuine narrative Whiplash (referring to a section building Rinwell and Law's relationship) has turned me off to investing wholly in the narrative, but at the same time I've sunk nearly 60 hours in the experience so far and I've hit a point where the sunk-cost fallacy is guiding my play experience.

I am no longer having fun outside of challenging Superbosses, and watching the skill trees expand and it sucks because I wanted to love this game.

the visuals, the voice acting, and the character interactions during skits and battles were fun... the fact there is no victory screen was a great choice also.
BUT while the story wasn't bad it was anything but fresh air, in fact it felt dead at times... so much so that they had to bloat the game via high hp enemies, long long cutscenes, and walking simulator sections... (*shudders just thinking of that last act*). Character growth isn't a thing for Rinwel and Shionne... like they do eventually change, but once you hit a millstone rather than naturally over time... Rinwel in particular was anoyying af (but hey she is a 14yr old i guess).... The DLC didn't improve or really add anything and really was just a long winded epilogue, with a very forced storyline that just had more bloat and lack of anything new.

overall disappointed and left unsatisfied... I kept playing hoping things would get better, but they only got worse aside from the voice 6.5/10

but tbh after these graphics... I don't think i could go back and play the older games anymore.

I couldn't stand this game. The charm of the series is gone and the Tales Studio has been closed for about a decade now. They no longer work independently and everything feels westernized now. The combat feels worse and more streamlined, gone is the charm and gone are the victory quotes and hilarious skits.

The series peeked with Vesperia, Symphonia, Abyss and Graces f. Xillia 1 is also great but different, Team Destiny and Team Symphony actually worked together on that project. After Xillia 1, the Tales Studio was absorbed under the Namco Brand and the games started recycling many assets. Berseria was also ok, but I didn't like the combat system. Hearts R is also underrated and I would buy a remaster without hesitation. I already have the Graces f remaster pre-ordered.

Tales of Xillia was my first tales of game, probably why its my favorite. You gotta check out Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition, some of the best characters in all of tales. Personally with the best mage Rita.

The final act of the game is when the story FINALLY bothers to give the Lords a bit of backstory because they have pretty much zero till then.

And then come the plot twists, so many dumb plot twists. There's even a plot twist that i spent the entire game thinking it was a bug because, when it happens near the start of the game, NOBODY says anything about it and it's never referenced again till the final act.
