The Russian royal family (the Romanovs) were related to many European monarchs, including the British royals. So, how Russian was Prince Philip and what was his relation to Nicholas II of Russia?

I think pretty much all the European royal families are related.

Isn’t it more like both the Russian and English royals have German heritage?

Most European royals are mostly German because marrying one of the many German monarchs dis not disturb the balance of power.
There were dozens of German states.

Also, Alexandra Fyodorovna was from Germany. Her father's German name was Theodor. It's still baffling how they were all related but still entirely unable to prevent the first world war.

There are several photos of King George V and Tsar Nicholas II wearing each other’s uniforms. They were cousins.

Yes the ties are interesting. But you do know the reason Philip was related to Alexandra & had “Russian heritage” is because Alexandra’s mother was Queen Victoria’s daughter.. right? So more accurately it’s that the Romanov children had both Russian & British heritage (along with German etc)

I love that you actually pronounced Edinburgh correctly: most non-Brits tend to say Edinburgh BURG.

Alexandra was her russian name, she was actually german

Her full german royal name was "Großherzogliche Hoheit Prinzessin Alix Viktoria Helene Luise Beatrix von Hessen und bei Rhein" and was from Darmstadt, Hessen... my hometown :)

On a somewhat related subject, I find it interesting that the Z crowd rants against the “west”. Yet at the same time some of the figures in Russian history they supposedly revere were not even Russian, like Catherine the Great. Or wanted Russia to be more western, like Peter the Great.

The Romanovs themselves were barely Russian, the British royals being related to them is due to their common heritage via queen Victoria. Prince Philip was not “Russian”, he was techically the descendent of Greek and Dane monarchs although genetically he wasn’t Greek. Nor Russian.

His family were Germans of the 30s to 40s too

Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, King George V of Britain and Tsar Nicholas of Russia were all first cousins from Queen Victoria. There's even photos of them together as children. Kinda wild they all look alike too

The last Romanovs were paternally descending from the Danish branch of House of Oldenburg. And so was prince Phillip /royal family of Greece as is the Norwegian royal family.

Well....romanovs were germans to begin with, the romanovs that ruled Russian Empire at the time of Russian revolution was a cadet branch of the main romanov line (which was mostly Russian in ancestry) which died back in the 18 th century

Even with their complex history, Britain, Russia, and Germany always seem to have strong ties. King George V, Tsar Nicholas, and Kaiser Wilhelm were cousins.

The Romanovs were ethnic Germans, not Russians.

I’ve been fascinated by these family ties for a long time.

Well, the old european monarch families as well as the nobility were supranational from all different parts of Europe, mostly from nowadays Germany, since there were the most small independent states and most eligible mates for monarchs, so perhaps a better way of putting it is that both English and sadly deceased Russian ruling families are German.
