The loss of JRPG as a meaningful descriptor for a game has been driving me crazy for years, even though that’s sort of embarrassing to say out loud. I’m glad there are other people out there like me! Great video as always.

I had the same thoughts too. I also remember back in the days, we used to just call it RPG's, no matter the region of where the game was created. Just as long as it had the elements that make an RPG, we would just call it an RPG. I don't even remember commercials and video game magazines mentioning jrpg and wester rpgs back then too. I felt like that start to sprout later in the 2000's, like after 2006 maybe or a bit later. I think the only rpg I actually enjoyed, that gave that same feeling as the rpgs back in the 90's, was most likely Yakuza: Like a Dragon for me.

A few things! One, I have never heard of SacriFire and I ABSOLUTELY want in on it! It looks AMAZING and I love how you travel through the world, the depth perception is wonderful and the battles look like a lot of flashy fun!

Secondly, I'm not into wrestling at all, and the game probably still isn't for me but I LOVE the idea of trying to lose with grace. That cracks me up.

And your final point was with "Japanese Styled RPGs" and how indies are constantly innovating and pushing while devs like Square are ...getting kind of stale. I just couldn't agree more. Indies know they're lesser known so they MUST pull out all the big guns at all times and have flawless polish and tbh, I think they're starting to mop the floor with some of these big budget games. And I'm happy they're keeping the timeless pixel art style alive and well! Great video!

I totally agree with you with the JRPG thing. I even misuse it all the time, saying that any game that has old final fantasy vibes is just a JRPG lol. So basically all turn based pixel games.
