The Proposal for a Russia-USA Tunnel

preview_player
Показать описание
There is a proposal to build a tunnel across the Bering Strait, uniting Russia and the US. It would stretch 85 kilometers across the Diomede islands, providing the first physical link between Asia and North America, boosting economic activity, trade and cooperation. However, it would require billions in additional infrastructure, Russia and the US use different rail gauges and the current political landscape is not ideal.

What do you think?! Should USA and Russia build a tunnel across the Bering Strait?

No bc Russias land on that side is very scarce and most of the business and stuff is on the west side of Russia so you’d have to travel so far across Russia to get to Moscow etc

Are you nuts
You’d have an enormous amount of traffic crossing into Canada then back into the USA then into Russia
Roads would have to be improved to say the least and accommodation, fuel stops, mechanical facilities

A bridge is better because it can be built faster than building a tunnel. It will take about 75 billion dollars to build the bridge and about 65 billion dollars to build the land connections to the Bering Strait Bridge.
The difference in rail gauges is irrelevant because the Bering Strait Railway will not connect to the Russian rail system, although there may be places where spurs come close together for transloading small amounts of freight between the two systems. The main purpose of the BSR railroad is to connect China to North America. So the BSR will cross over the Trans Siberian Railroad and cross over the Baikal Amur Mainline railroad. The BSR railroad will run from the oil fields of northern China to the oil fields of Alberta. It will be about 6, 450 miles long.

You can guarantee the US would bomb that railroad

China and Russia also have different gauges, they just swap bogies at the border (well, mongolian border). The bigger problem is that there is no rail anywhere near either side of the bering straight.

This might be the only megaproject that requires another equally, if not more megaproject to attach it to civilization on its eastern end. Attaching it on the west end would also be no small feat.

There is a proposal to put things on large floating and moving platforms and use this novel technology to move freight cheaply across the Bering Straight. It would provide a physical link between Asia and North America.

This is a good idea under a conservative leader that would make peace with russia

Id be curious abt the technical challenges in this. Wouldnt maintaining a tunnel under a sea thats frozen for the greater part of the year be even more costly than actually buildin it?

If they build that there's gonna be an endless war in there💀
