Wouldn't it be easier to teach letter sounds before letter names (as is done in Montessori classrooms)? I've seen little three-year-olds who've been taught this way who are then able to easily sound out and read tons of words. I've also seen kids who've learned letter names before sounds who have that letter-name knowledge get in the way when trying to sound out words.

Is sounding out with non-continuant sounds still harder than with continuant sounds if the child hasn't been taught to stretch each sound? I know that Dr. Diane McGuinness advises against stretching to sound out words.
