CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Ethan (John Wayne) shares the terrible news that he found Lucy's body, Brad (Harry Carey Jr.) rides into the desert and gets himself killed.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
John Wayne plays Ethan Edwards, a former Confederate soldier who returns to his brother Aaron's frontier cabin three years after the end of the Civil War. Ethan still has his rebel uniform and weapons, a large stash of Yankee gold, and no explanations as to where he's been since Lee's surrender. A loner not comfortable in the bosom of his family, Ethan also harbors a bitter hatred of Indians (though he knows their lore and language well) and trusts no one but himself. Ethan and Martin Pawley (Jeffrey Hunter), Aaron's adopted son, join a makeshift band of Texas Rangers fending off an assault by renegade Comanches. Before they can run off the Indians, several homes are attacked, and Ethan returns to discover his brother and sister-in-law dead and their two daughters kidnapped. While they soon learn that one of the girls is dead, the other, Debbie, is still alive, and with obsessive determination, Ethan and Martin spend the next five years in a relentless search for Debbie -

This scene all but proves John Wayne deserved an Oscar nomination.

Wow, Brad really loved Lucy. He knew he’d be killed if he rode in there alone. He couldn’t live without her.

i always get goosebumps when i hear Wayne deliver those lines. the way he scrteam but in the last sentence his voice breaks down, to show us how hard it was for him. tremendous dramatic performance, i believe it was his best ever... he should've gotten a wilder range of roles, but wayne alawys wanted to gueard his image.

Probably the best real acting line John ever delivered.

That scene alone should have garnered the Duke his first Oscar, Proof that John Wayne was an Actor!

“As long as you live, don’t ever ask me more.” Listen to how his voice softly breaks. This is John Wayne. Men don’t cry. “Like hell they don’t!”!

If you ever hear people say John Wayne was a "one dimensional, " actor, play them this scene.

In my opinion as I have watched this movie a time or two over the years, John Wayne's best acting job.

One of maybe 2 times JW nearly cried on scene, before yelling in anger.

I love this film so much. I suggested to my partner we watch it and she wasn't keen at all at first because of it being a western and how old it is. Couple of hours later it wasn't just me who loved this film anymore.

Harry Carey Jr. (Brad Jorgensen), a co-star and good friend of Duke for decades, probably hinted best at the mystery of Wayne's Ethan Edwards. He said that during "The Searchers" shoot, a look appeared in Duke's eyes that wasn't there before and never appeared again.

This was John Wayne', s greatest performance. This scene especially his reaction to Brad's question always gives me chills!!!

Connected to this scene is when Ethan rides out of the canyon after burying his niece. He does not tell them what has happened but is clearly in shock.

Amazing acting and writing.

Best acting of Wayne’s career. You can just feel he’s a man with pent up rage

The Duke, in the hands of John Ford, proved he was an exceptional actor. No other working actor at the time could've portrayed the stone cold and driven Ethan.

Uh huh...And if this scene was filmed today we'd get the full-blooded rape and mutilation of Lucy (all done with edits of .0005 seconds or less) and it would just be "Meh.." Having Wayne respond to Harry Carey, Jr.'s question with "Don't ever ask me more!" conjures up a horror in your imagination that's stronger than ANYTHING you could show on screen. Director John Ford proves once again that Less is More. Outstanding.
