CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After many years away, Ethan (John Wayne) returns home to his family.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
John Wayne plays Ethan Edwards, a former Confederate soldier who returns to his brother Aaron's frontier cabin three years after the end of the Civil War. Ethan still has his rebel uniform and weapons, a large stash of Yankee gold, and no explanations as to where he's been since Lee's surrender. A loner not comfortable in the bosom of his family, Ethan also harbors a bitter hatred of Indians (though he knows their lore and language well) and trusts no one but himself. Ethan and Martin Pawley (Jeffrey Hunter), Aaron's adopted son, join a makeshift band of Texas Rangers fending off an assault by renegade Comanches. Before they can run off the Indians, several homes are attacked, and Ethan returns to discover his brother and sister-in-law dead and their two daughters kidnapped. While they soon learn that one of the girls is dead, the other, Debbie, is still alive, and with obsessive determination, Ethan and Martin spend the next five years in a relentless search for Debbie -

John Ford movies are so quietly emotional. Really unlike any other director ever. Breathtaking beauty without ever any embellishment or calling attention to itself.

Love the way this starts, the warmth of the family, the lovely children, snug house, even a little dog, the eldest daughters who's got her first boyfriend, a long missed relative
It totally throws you off balance for what's about to follow.
The colours and quality of that opening image is incredible too, technicolour was gorgeous....

My all time favourite movie and I especially love these early scenes....Martha clearly loves him, look at her eyes, her hand movements and gestures. Wayne also portrays this and his rage after the Indian  attack is that his love has been defiled (he makes no mention of his brother). Acting of the highest order.

One of the most visually stunning westerns, ever.

The mirror of the first and last scenes is amazing. Not only the visual of the door opening and then closing, but the symbolism. The first scene shows Martha, the only person who truly loved Ethan unconditionally, to whom he was returning. The last scene shows Ethan walking away as his actions have burned all his bridges and left him no longer lovable.

Monument Valley should be in the opening credits right after John Wayne. We saw it as never before, in color. Ford made many movies there but in B&W. The cool thing is, Monument Valley looks the same in 2018 as it did in 1956, or 1868. You can still see it through John Ford's eye. The Navajo Nation owns the land, it is sacred to them, and they aren't gonna let anyone mess with it. But they do understand it's value in tourism and run some excellent tours of John Ford's filming locations, including this one. They even take you to John Ford Point. Amazing views and the guides know a lot of great stories. I admire them for not selling out and preserving the land as it is.
