This is a motormouth couple car review of the Mazda CX-5 compact SUV. The 2021.5 model Mazda has upgraded all models to the 10.25” display screen with Mazda Connect. The US, got the upgrade to their 2021 model, but Canada lagged behind. There is a huge improvement to the system.
There will be a new 2022 CX-5 coming sometime in the winter and will have a starting price of $30,200 CAD with standard AWD in Canada. The top Signature trim is coming in at $43,350 CAD, a little more than this 2021.5 model. In addition to design updates for 2022, the 2.5T will receive performance improvements. With premium fuel, it will get a bump in horsepower from 250 to 256 and turbo models will also receive paddle shifters to enhance the driving experience. Looking forward to driving it when it arrives sometime next year. n the meantime, let’s focus on the 2021.5 CX-5, this is the one that is available to buy and you may get a better deal on this model as the 2022’s start to trickle in. What’s new? i-Activsense is now standard on every CX-5 trim which includes, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, pedestrian detection, forward obstruction, radar cruise control with stop & go, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Other standard features include, the 10.25” display and 19” wheels on the GS AWD trim. Our test model is the top Signature trim in Soul Red Crystal Metallic. Mazda embraces the design philosophy “less is more” placing everything you need in arms reach when driving. Mazda uses a simplistic exterior design with lines that reflect light and shadow to give the CX-5 a sense of motion even when parked. The Mazda CX-5 Signature offers a sophisticated interior with a touch of elegance. The beautiful, soft Nappa leather upholstery in Cocoa and Abachi wood trim creates an upscale interior that can easily compete with luxury brands. With improved technology, the standard 10.25” centre display with Mazda Connect is intuitive to use and faster than the outgoing model. Mazda focused on creating a quieter cabin by significantly reducing the noise level of tires and wind especially on the highway. Some standard features of the 2021.5 CX-5 include, a 10.25” display, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, push button start, heated front seats and manual recline rear seats.One up from the base model in Canada comes with a power liftgate, leatherette trimmed upholstery, 6-way power driver’s seat, heated steering wheel and a 6 speaker audio system. The GT trim is where you’ll find the extra features like leather trimmed upholstery, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, heated rear seats, 10-way power driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, driver seat memory, a power passenger seat, navigation system and a 7” LCD display.
When it comes to space the CX-5 is not best in class, but it offers a comfortable interior and has plenty of cargo space for our carry-on and a cooler. It is not as long as the Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV, Volkswagen Tiguan and Nissan Rogue but has equal front legroom to the RAV4, more than the Tiguan, but less than the Rogue and CRV. The CX-5 offers competitive second row legroom with the CRV having the most. Overall cargo capacity and cargo space behind the second row is one of the smallest in this class.
JD Power gives the 2021 Mazda CX-5 an impressive overall score of 82/100 and a quality and reliability score of 81/100. CarEdge states the CX-5 will retain 55% of its value over 5 years. Mazda offers a warranty of 3 years with unlimited km in Canada and 3 years or 36,000 miles in the US.

I have a new Mazda 6 with this same engine, and I don’t think that Mazda really has any competition. The click of the switches, the double pane windows, the feel of materials, is considerably above Toyotas and Hondas and VWs.

I got a new 2021 Carbon Edition CX5 6 months ago. It looks and drives great. Nice, smooth, quiet ride that feels more like a Euro sedan than a crossover. The fit/finish/ materials used are really up-
scale too. I love the exterior color with 19inch black wheels and the red leather
seats. We are a family of 3 and the CX5 is a good fit. The Mazda dealership has been excellent with both the sale and service too. So in a nutshell I have been very happy with the CX5.

I have a 2020 CX-5 GT turbo and it's the best vehicle I've ever owned. If it got wrecked or stolen today I'd replace it with the exact same thing and I've never said that about any previous cars. Other brands I've owned were: Honda, Acura, Chevrolet, GMC, Audi, BMW, Lexus, Hyundai and Genesis.
I also really like the rotary dial for the infotainment controller and hope Mazda doesn't get rid of it.

“Jinba Ittai” .... is the term used to describe the symmetry (the balanced connection) ... when ‘the horse and the rider become one’. I’m not so sure I see this design language/philosophy in this particular Mazda, BUT ... the CX-5 is at the top of my list when considering style, drive and ‘bang for the buck’. $10, 000 cheaper than any plug-in or hybrid, quieter than most, great materials and fun to drive. Hey THANK YOU - you guys nailed this! only critts, moonroof affects handling and this is famous for its handling. Their road noise as disclaimed was on winter tires - should be clarified to be one of the BEST in ITS segment NVH is amazing in this! \absolutely compares as a cheaper alternative to luxury crossovers but when comparing to the big three or the koreans this car is one of the quietest you can buy! - touch screen no thanks, never have to clean a screen in a Mazda other than dust every few months. there are certain things this STUBBORN brand has nailed. ALSO noting this SIZE segment doesnt really have power comparables so it really is the SPORTIEST COMPACT CROSSOVER --- maybe some of these are my opinions or trust this random commenter as a car nerd who has DRIVEN MANY compact crossovers and shopped the options -HARD SHOPPER. (i do not own a mazda i am a tire kicker)but turbo sportage, GONE, turbo forester, GONE. you have to go to a bigger bulkier vehicle now to get these power outputs -ALSO Anyone have good handling ?? debatable but no one has felt as good as the CX-5 (to traditional weight and feedback that inspires confidence because you feel what you are doing with the wheels, NO numbness, AND the on center feeling is one of the BEST ive ever felt period, since 2013 this CX-5 rack has improved to maintain the top handling crossover SINCE its inception it continues to be IMO).

if you are finally stepping out of a car, or SPECIALLY MANUAL DRIVERS - you are going to miss the sportiness in ALMOST all competitors in this segment. Mazda's top seller for a reason and top rated by most critics still almost 10 years old (yes 2017 and newer reflect this design, and a refresh for 2022 as well BUT chassis, tranny, block all manufactured since 2012 in Hiroshima Japan! and now MAZDA is ranked the MOST RELIABLE BRAND IN THE WORLD BY CONSUMER REPORTS. i am just saying. researched compact crossovers for well over 6 years now and hands on, design is subjective yes driving dynamics are not. trust the feedback from professionals/rankers. sure preferences are different but generally speaking, you like sporty, you dont need an Audi or BMW to accomplish your dream daily crossover, just buy a TURBO CX-5 and thank this random commenter with a reply :) )

Great review- love Mazda. No one does it quite like them. I know there are better vehicles out there at the luxury and premium levels…. But for drivers it’s at or near the top of the list for mainstream brands.

I got lucky and found a 2021 carbon turbo, for sticker, with red interior. It’s still in Japan and I won’t get it til mid January. I jumped on it because I’m getting a lot of money for my 2014 CX5 with 100k miles on it. And next year the carbon won’t have the turbo or the Bose stereo, both of these things are pretty much all I wanted in the car anyway. The carbon looks are a bonus.

I have 2018 Mazda 6 Signature and very happy wit it...I drove the CX5 but the 6 was just much much more fun to drive, I'd rather have the CX5 but the ride of the 6 won me over...but I'm one of the few who appreciate the 6 bc they are no longer making them.
