*Do you have any dealership horror stories or have you been lucky?*

45 years at a Chrysler dealership in Ontario, never had one that wouldn't come out, circlip on inner stub shaft, a couple of hits with steering knuckle swung over and no problem problem

I just changed out the passenger side CV and the intermediate shaft. I took the teuck to the dealer. They told me the intermediate shaft is not replaceable and not available. They quoted me $4k to replace the entire frint differential and new CV's. I found the intermediate shaft in a kit on eBay. I bought a new CV axle with a life warranty and replaced both parts. Took about 3hrs. Cost me $300 compared to $4k. Best part is the intermediate shaft kit came with a rubber boot that goes on rhe end of the CV to protect the splines of the CV and intermediate to Hopefully keep them from wearing out.

Your dealership experience seems to be similar to my dealership experience half way across the county. Love my Ram truck but the dealerships are usually bad.

Hey Justin
Happy to hear the super glue is holding on the cv boot
Just a suggestion for the next time try using vulcanizing cement the stuff used to repair tires it’s literally made for rubber repairs
Have a great day!

I’m really surprised that they don’t make speedi-boots anymore. It was a split CV boot replacement that let you cut off the old boot, then clamp the split boot over it and use a set of locking pins to hold it together. In many cases they outlasted OEM CV boots and a semi competent shade tree mechanic could have it on in an hour or less. Had one on the inner cv joint of a Subaru for over a decade

If you have rubber cement used for tire patches I think that would have worked well as a temporary patch on the boot.

I’m really surprised the super glue worked! Glad it did for you but when I saw the tear in that boot and you mentioned temporary repair, my first thought was to clean that boot with alcohol and use flex tape over it. That flex tape is rubbery and sticks like crazy. But man, I’m amazed that dealership couldn’t swap it out. That had to be one green horn mechanic. Ok watching for the update!! Good luck!!

I remember when vehicles were repairable. Now we must beg dealers and swap entire part groups. What a shame. Hope your fix lasts for you brother!

I’m sure it’s been mentioned, but Dorman makes uni-fit CV boots for this truck. This is a split boot that’s glued when you install it then clamped ($27-$35+-).

20 maybe 30 years ago I bought a cv boot repair kit where the boot came in two have you glued together. It held up pretty well.

Funny enough I just did that same EXACT job on my 2014 1500 there’s a snap ring in there that’s tapered and only allows the axle to be installed, I removed the passenger side housing of the differential, cut off the cv axle, and bought a $150 kit from Amazon that comes with BOTH stub shafts, axle seals, o rings, and snap rings, bearings etc, installed everything and it all fits perfect and fixed all my issues

That does not look overly rusted at all. I'm near the IL/WI border and with the salt they put on the roads during the winter makes a lot more rust than that.
It almost sounds like the dealer was trying to up-sell to a larger repair.

They sure did buger that diff housing up. I've replaced cv shafts with far more corrosion than that. Seems a little strange to me. The fact that the end lonk is not tight is a real indicator of the level of "technicians" they have there. I'd watch that seal after this. When you do get thetime to swap it out, it might be a good idea to replace that seal at the same time. I'd love to know what they were looking to cut up. Seems to me they wanted to take more money out of your pocket with that full diff swap they quoted you.

saw a post below about using flex tape as a temporary fix, never crossed my mind to try that but flex tape is amazing, I am going to have to try it on an older car, it has saved me thousands for fixes around the house, I think it might work

I appreciate all these videos. I drive my 2020 ram bighorn Hemi 800 miles a week for work. Just hit 80k miles. Runs great, knock on wood. I sure hope I don’t have issues. I don’t haul anything, just drive it. Justin - would you still recommend a Ram after all the issues you’ve had? I debate getting a Laramie, just for the upgraded leather seats.

I had the exact same thing happen to me on my 18. I basically did exactly what you did except I used flex seal. I did it with the intention of replacing it that next weekend. Bought the part and it's sitting in my shop right now. Flex seal is going on week 5 😅.

To be honest I would have tried flex seal like a roofing tar sealant...but nice fix man. The dealer has my 2018 Jeep 2 door Wrangler...they are replacing the clutch as the clutch almost caught fire...they said it is a KNOWN problem that they have no fix for other than replacing the clutch with one that you guessed it can also catch have had it a MONTH...yes, a MONTH! They could not get the part apparently....ughh
