Tommaso Venturini from Sciences Po (Paris Institute of Political Studies) explores data mining and mapping in order to illuminate four common misunderstandings about digital methods. He defines these as:

1. Digital traces are not sociological data
2. Quantity is less interesting that variety
3. Digital does not mean automatic
4. More quantification demands more qualification

Using examples from the real world – from Google to the French Parliament – he demonstrates how data can be identified, extracted, cleaned, merged, analysed and presented. It's a brave new world we live in.

Part 3/3 in SEI's Data Revolution workshop series June 2015.
