The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution released rare video capturing the 1986 dive through the wreckage of the Titanic.

Rare video capturing the 1986 dive through the wreckage of the Titanic at the bottom of the North Atlantic will be released Wednesday evening, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announced.

Most of the footage – which was captured by cameras on the human-occupied submersible Alvin and the remotely-operated "Jason Junior" in July 1986 – "has never been released to the public," the institution writes.

The 1986 dive led by famed oceanographer Robert Ballard marked "the first time humans had set eyes on the ill-fated ship since 1912," the institution says.

On the ship's maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City, the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank in April 1912. More than 1,500 people died, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica.

This footage was all published in 1985-86 and used in the National geographic documentary on the Titanic from 1986. Saw this all many times back then.

Did the film even last 1 minute. What's new with this particular little film, that we haven't seen before?

Random thought…if there weren’t enough life boats and there were kids left behind to die due to space…why were women getting on? It’s as bad as a man if you think about it. The fact they took up space over a child is insane. Heart goes out to these people in general, but I just don’t get why it wasn’t children first
