This is probably the most requested video about the new MacBooks: Are their performance, thermal, and battery differences between the 14 inch and 16 inch MacBook Pros with new M1 Pro chip? Well, in this comparison video I bought two M1 Pro MacBook Pros with the exact same specs, and we're going to compare the two to find out if there are any differences between these different machines!

Would you be put off about buying a 14” M1 Pro MacBook after seeing this video? UPDATE: Vadim and Max Tech and I have discussed differences in temperatures we saw, and it turns out iStatistica hasn't been updated in a while to feature node temps for the SOC, so the numbers we saw were broadly for much of the rest of the system. While the SOC does get hotter, I still found in my test that surface temperatures and fan noise wasn't as bad as what they found in their test. Definitely an interesting conundrum!

The fan comparison was absolute fun, the 14” sounded like a calm rainy day and the intel 16” like a massive waterfall down on my roof.

I can't praise Luke Miani enough your coverage of the new MacBook Pro has been so thorough and detailed but at the same time you convey the information in an easy to follow style that is easy to understand which makes it so easy to make an informed buying decision. You guys ROCK nothing but love from the UK ♥️

I’d love to see you compare the 14” M1 Pro vs 14” M1 Max battery life in the same kind of tests! No one else has done this!

Switching from a 16" to a 14" MacBook is life-changing lol it feels good to be able to toss around a laptop and sit comfortably on my lap again after 4 years lol it's so portable and the 14" is just the perfect size!!!

This video is what I’ve been waiting for and provides me with added comfort in my decision of going with the 14” form factor. Thank you.

I wonder: If you use Macs Fan Control to max out the fans - will the device be faster? It works (the program), I can confirm that from my 16“ but that would be an interesting test.

Apple has absolutely blown me away. This video alone demonstrates how sticking with Intel was setting us back for years.

Hey Luke,
the blanket part is purely genuinely genius.
I have a question, though. Did you try to put the two macbooks on your lap and feel how much heat they produce ?

Would love a direct comparison of the 8 core and 10 core versions of the 14 inch! Thanks for all your work on these, eased a bunch of my concerns about this purchase already!

Just canceled my order for 14". Thank you for the feedback about the fan noise, I can't work with something like that.

The Mac is Back baby. This is as exciting a time in Macdom as the mid 2000s during the PowerPC > Intel transition. A rebirth of the Mac. I love how apple is unafraid to abandon a platform when it is starting to hold their product line back, and also admit when they are wrong with design choices and give pro users what they ask for like how they did with the 2019 Mac Pro and now these bad boys.

This video is really interesting after watching Max Tech do almost identical comparisons. Their 14 inch consistently was hitting over 100 degrees under heavy load with very audible fans and their 16 inch never really got hotter than 90 degrees with fans rarely audible. Equal performance in the benchmarks but 14 was always much hotter and louder than the 16

Very comprehensive comparison! Imo most ppl who are looking at the 14" prolly rank portability q highly so the 16" jump might be too much. I was curious if the lower spec/binned 8 core 14" MBP has different battery life and charging speeds (67W vs 94W) compared to the other 14" models since its got less cores perhaps it consumes less power, lasts longer and runs cooler? I think it's a consideration cuz ppl considering the 14" MBP need the portability and battery life is a big part of that, would really appreciate such a comparison!!

Thanks for another video on the M1 Pro/Max.
It would be awesome to see battery life comparison between M1 Pro 16'' and M1 Max 16''.
The Verge states that there is big hit on battery with Max and that Apple confirms that.

I would like to see a fan noise comparison between the 14” M1 and the intel 16” while in clamshell mode. I ask because i use my intel 16” macbook in clamshell configuration with it connected to two monitors at my desk. It runs like a hairdryer under load. I desire replacing it with a 14” for lighter travelling, but fear the increase in fan noise of a smaller chassis when compared to my 16” intel model. Is it possible that Apple’s new 14” is quieter than the intel 16’” model under load, or am i getting caught up in the hype? P.S. Good work on the video. Nicely done, and thanks for the time lapse and cutting straight to the figures. I appreciate it.

The same review from the Maxtech channel the results were much different. Both had the same performance but the 14' was constantly above 95C and the fan went crazy whilst the 16' was dead silent and temperature around 85C. Also the battery of 14' was at 3% and for the 16' was at 36% after the tests
