My 6 TB WD MyBook Got completed ERASED...I am sooo pissed of...6TB of data completed gone. I noticed it today since My kids were trying to stream from it. I have the My Book Live DUO 2-Bay. I've had this for over 6 years and this is the first time this crap happened.

I am also one of the affected users, I disagree that WD acted quickly as it was 2 days after I reported the issue I got the general disconnect email. I only had 1.2tb in use on a 4tb my book live duo but it now reports 3tb in use. Waiting for WD to say how to proceed, hopefully they will offer some sort of data recovery service, I bought mine new from PC World in 2016 so I guess it was old stock, but even so for a network connected device WD should be updating security regularly.

This is why I keep my hard drives in a cave in the desert.

2tb mybook drive now says I am using impressed. Never again with WD and unable to even get past the admin so it is now a brick. Only public shares with nothing in them. Thought I had been hacked until I saw a PCmag article online. I did buy it for the NAS box function and never replaced it as there was no reason to.

I had used My Book Live Duo for many years. A bit underpowered but it became clear as time went on that WD was just interested in selling units (security and software support not so much). You had to be an SSH guru to fix various problems so normal plug-and-play users be outta luck. So did this attack only occur for people who had enabled remote access and poked a hole in their routers firewall or because MBL or MBLD devices phoned home to WD servers and received some command and control? If it was the result of the latter I'll never consider getting another WD NAS ever.

Is it safe to keep using WD My Cloud if I turn off remote access in the menus? Or should I block access in the rougher? It's just I find the WD my cloud useful for streaming Films and TV shows to TV. Also, it being a network drive it's always on so don't need to turn on PC for a network share. I did use to use it for backing up photos, off my phone, but don't trust it with my personal files. So just use it for just media.

When people will ever learn that Backups should be disconnected from the internet and if possible on a separate VLAN.

But this doesn't have any influence on the QNAP Nas?

The hackers are probably from Apple iCloud. Annoying subscription based program from Apple that keeps popping up on my Mac and iPhone, im pretty curious to think they have something to do with that mybook attack, till this day I still store data on mybook but never connected it online, because I always been WOKE!

To be clear - these are only boxes with an ethernet connection right? That gray box on the video, mine is exactly like that, just has USB, esata and FireWire

Neat…I mean too bad. Will check my myBook drive later this morning, but I just have an external USB 3 drive, not a NAS.

Plan was to switch my WD My Book Live to QNAP. Bought the QNAP, then QNAP issues happened and now WD! :(

Never connect your external drive to the Internet, I thought that is common sense. But it isn't.

I'm glad I took that piece of garbage apart and stripped the drive out of it about a month after I bought it. The bare drive was more useful to me than the extremely limited functionality. It was terrible. After that was when I built my first DIY NAS with very little money and it had all the features I wanted. Nobody thinks about backing up data until it's too late. If you don't backup data and you lose it, it's your own fault.

Just don't connect it to the internet. Who cares about having movies on plex on the go. Just stream or watch something else.

Have 2 of these and have powered down for now. I haven’t been affected, but to be honest I only use them for LAN & WAN access always made me a bit suspicious.

Now trying to figure out how to completely & permanently block all inbound & outbound traffic for these 2 devices on a BT Smart Hub 2 but that is a bit of a minefield / less than 100% obvious.

Until that’s achieved or in the unlikely event of a patch that does the same thing from WD for the MBL series then they’re staying off for now. I have full backups of both, but just didn’t want the aggro of rebuilding.

Time to change & upgrade to a newer (non WD) solution perhaps!?

If you have VPN this can be prevented.
