Here’s what actually happened

This place is/was a new world mall in Bangkok, Thailand in 1983. It was popular for a while until it was forced to close in 1997 after violating building regulations on 7 of its 11 floors. In 1999, a fire caused the roof to collapse, and without a roof, the rain eventually filled up the bottom floor of the old mall like a pond. Because of the still water, it naturally became a habitat for tons of mosquitos, as well as a breeding ground for them. In 2004, the locals got fed up with the thousands of mosquitos invading their town and decided to release around 3000 catfish, koi, and other fish breeds into the “pond” to eat the mosquito larva. I’m not sure the exact year, but the water was eventually drained and all the fish were removed prior to that.
