How to Fix "System Idle Process" Taking Too Much CPU [Tutorial]

Have you ever opened up Task Manager and noticed the System Idle Process is using 90% or more of your CPU? Contrary to what you might think, that’s not a bad thing. Here’s what that process actually does.

Issues addressed in this tutorial:

system idle process high cpu usage windows 10
system idle process high cpu usage

system idle process is high windows 7

If you’ve ever poked around in the Task Manager—Windows 10 users have to look under the “Details” tab—you’ll see that the System Idle Process is using most, if not all, of your CPU. But the System Idle Process is just that; an idling process made by the operating system. Without this process constantly keeping your processor occupied with something to do, your system could potentially freeze.

In other words, the CPU resources used by the System Idle Process are just the CPU resources that aren’t being used. If programs are using 5% of your CPU, the System Idle Process will be using 95% of your CPU. You can think of it as a simple placeholder. That’s why the Task Manager describes this process as the “percentage of time the processor is idle.” It has a PID (process identifier) of 0.

Windows hides the System Idle Process information from the normal Processes tab in Windows 10’s Task Manager to keep things simple, but it’s still shown on the Details tab.

There are very few things the average user does to cause a processor to run at full capacity. Even a modest modern processor has more than enough capacity for even the most challenging game, image or video editor or any other program you care to use. So it can be annoying when Windows itself utilizes all your processor causing your computer to slow down. When that process is called the ‘System Idle Process’, the irony is not lost on us.

This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7 operating systems.Works for all major computer manufactures (Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Samsung).

Works great, thanks! Rarely do these internet bug fixes really solve the problem. My computer was lagging every time I opened a folder in explorer, one quick scan and boom, corrupt files detected and fixed, problem solved! Thanks for this, I am going to share this video on my blog.

even though its taking too much CPU the process is doing nothing, because other programs have nothing better to do. Its not a problematic process

%100% works *** This issue caused due to adding a hard drive or SSD in CDROM. Remove ANY "hard drive Caddy" and put original cdrom back (original Issue: after sleep my ideal show 25% or 30% high)

system idle process is like your computer biting its nails. it is normal for it to take up 90 percent of your cpu, but it is not resource-intensive and is very normal.

It says windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations and then proceeded to scan 2 more times but said the exact same thing each time and then nothing, help would be nice

The System Idle Process is, as the name suggests, just a measure of how much free processor time your computer currently has.
Being high is an indication that your cpu is idle.
