How this all happened:

Ussop actually couldn't just believe that Merry wasn't able to set sail anymore. So they Luffy and him got to a huge debate/argument then they decided to have a duel. Who wins will get to decide the fate of the Merry then Luffy won but left the Merry to Ussop and abandoned the ship.

But Ussop already knew from the Skypiea Arc that Merry is little by little getting weaker and weaker.

He just couldn't take the reality when he just got informed and it was really really heartbreaking for him because he really loves the ship so much.

Usopp was fighting for his pride. He knew the ship was dying since Skypiea. But his lost to Franky damaged his pride and felt so useless that led him to challenge his captain. Makes sense why Sanji told Usopp in Enies lobby that "Everyone has things they can and cannot do. I'll do what you can't do, and you do what I can't do".

Usopp thinks he is weak and useless to the crew. When they wanted to replace mary( was important like a friend) because it was to no use to them anymore, he got scared, that they would leave him too one day. So he decided to leave the crew with his own accord. The duel over mary was just an excuse. He knew he had no chance of winning and if luffy built a new ship he wouldn’t need it anyway so he could have it. BUT he wanted to officially end things by ending their friendship. Maybe that way he could ensure himself he had no place to return to.

I saw Usopp lose but before that he put up the best fight. Oda wrote a masterpiece and I couldn't stop OP there. If Usopp actually left I would have stopped ngl. Also Luffy now has developed as character the way he went after Sanji.
