The 3 simple steps to safely sheath katana swords! Recommended for iaido trainees and cosplayers

*The content is based on personal studies and experience
There is no intention of denying other theories and cultural aspects

1. Cup the end of the sheath/scabbard with your left hand
Be sure to cup it completely, so you can barely see the entrance.

2. Place the katana on your left hand and slide
Use your left hand as a rail to guide the end of the katana to the entrance of the sheath. You must not only bring your right hand forward, but also your left and back at the same time.

3. Once the end of the katana reaches the entrance, start sliding the katana in
Unless you move your left hand, there is absolutely no risk of cutting your fingers if you use this method correctly. However please keep in mind that according to the style of the martial art, there are many other ways to sheath a katana too!

I like this because I now have a better understanding of the sheathing movement in samurai movies!

I sometimes still practice drawing and sheathing with my iaito remembering my oh so long ago iaidō classes. In Aikiken and Kenjutsu we only practice with a bokken.

Yes, it's very much a tactile exercise. I use it with non-Japanese swords as well, even double-edged swords (gently run the flat against your hand). I cringe when I see someone stop and look at their hands. It's not a taboo so much as it's more difficult to coordinate the sheathing with your eyes than simply letting physics do its thing.
