New SUVs for 35000 Euro or Less (ENG) Marek Drives

SUVs - love’em, hate’em, somehow almost everyone seems to drive one these days. There’s a method in this madness. I did a listicle about 25 thousand euro compact cars the other month, and it seems for not much extra money you’re getting a whole lot more with an SUV. So today it’s 12 SUVs or crossovers for up to 35 grand.

I decided to take a look at the largest cars in this segment that can be bought up to 35 thousand euro. The prices are from manufacturers’ websites in Germany, hence in some markets some prices may differ. Also the prices are accurate as of second half of February 2023. If you find a better in six months or prices go up - sorry, but that's how the market works.

Are you looking for an SUV? What's your budget? What features are a must for you? I’ll be posting listacles every last Friday of the month. If you have an idea for what sort of cars I should make a list of, let me know. Maybe it will be the subject of one of the future videos.

No Dacia? I picked up by brand new Duster yesterday, it's a 2022 model so a bit of discount, 22300 Euro for a diesel Prestige. I live in Spain and have use dirt roads to get to my house, hence the Duster.

Isn't it better to look at station wagons than to crossovers? Especially when most of them are not 4x4.

Sir.
Thank you for the comparison & technicality of SUV prices for the demos= the ordinary people. It would also be more interesting if you compares the insurance and the maintenance guarantees provided by the manufacturers.

Great Review. I’ve owned a 2.0 tdi 4 motion Tiguan and I had no problems at all with it, but I prefer my current SUV the Countryman. My choice from this selection for something different would be the C5 Aircross.

Great list! I also liked the 25k family car review. I'm eyeing the CX 30/5, I might go for the skyactive X engine on the cx30

I'm thinking of buying a Q3 without an engine and have you send me the five cylinder from the RSQ3. Thoughts?

I’m the happy owner of a Mazda cx5. For my next car I’m not yet decided if will be a cX-60 or to change with the D segment.

Thanks for the list Marek. If I'm being pragmatic it would be hard to go past the Corolla Cross - the Toyota hybrid system is just so competent. Good point about the seats in the Aircross as well. I have the same setup in my car and it's very handy.
Is the Subaru Crosstrek/XV SUV enough to belong in this category as well? I realise that it's body is still hatchback based but I think it ticks enough boxes to fulfil this brief.

Here’s a suggestion for a future car list you should make: cars that are currently not available in Poland that you think should come to the country.

I've seen the C5 Aircross entry. I would just like to add that I'm sorry for the disappearance of the Citroen C5 (the proper one) alongside the Hydro-pneumatic suspension. Of course I say I am sorry to see it go, but I would have not spent 40 000 euro on a brand new Citroen C5 so I can see why they had to axe it. I owned 2 Citroen C5s, 1 Citroen Xantia and 2 Citroen BX but was no good path to follow to the new cars so I bought a Hyundai and then another Hyundai and that was it.

For the inevitable "best car up to 50k euro" you should try to rank them. What YOU, as a car journalist, would actually recommend to buy. For example, is no options bmw x3 20d for 50k better than fully loaded Tiguan 2L tdi 4motion, things like that. It's harder video to make, but more useful I think.

I'm fine with SUVs being mixed as a term with crossover. What I'm NOT fine with is auto manufacturers dropping 4WD or watering down their abilities.

I'm actively looking to buy an SUV. Since you're asking, here's my list of criteria:
- good fuel economy (so small 3cyl engines are out) and decent reliability
- a decent interior space (mid C-Segment). Anything above 4.5m starts being too much
- comfortable interior and decent materials (so Dacia is out) and ideally decent soundproofing
- decent ground clearance and off-road credentials, so some kind of 4WD is non-negotiable. I'm not gonna be crawling rocks but muddy/icy country roads with steep inclines and deep ruts will be visited, often! (so no Hondas or French sofas-on-wheels - sorry, I mean cars)
- decent handling, because my daily drive involves navigating 30km of narrow twisty mountain roads (emphasis on the word DECENT in this case and the above one, although I do admit I VERY often drive like a maniac - but my current 1997 Vitara manages remarkably well for its chassis in both cases, being a light car)
- ideally, reasonable servicing/parts costs

I'm more of a car guy rather than a showoff that buys a car to park it outside the cafeteria, so I'd be picking Subarus if they were reliable enough and economical to drive, but they're neither of them, especially the CVTs. BMWs or Mercs ... not so easily (they appeal to the wrong people for my tastes ;) ), but I'm not saying no...

@MarekDrivesENG, I'd love it if you did a video like this one but for used SUVs of the last 4-7 years. Or at least if you told me your recommendation(s) based on this list. One part of me says "go for the best you can get for around 30K or a little more and live with it", while my other half says "buy something cheaper now that will get the job done and has a good resale value (read: S-Cross, most likely), so that you don't lose much when the Toyota mini Land Cruiser comes out, hopefully soon"

I am not looking for an SUV and I think most people looking for one would be better served by a station wagon instead.

At least here in the US, the early 1990s Toyota RAV4 was the original “CUV” beating the Qashqai to market by 10 years. 😊

Drove all the cars, Opel is hands down the worst - terrible drive, bad visibility, bad looks, slow transmission, design is outdated by 10 years - it has nothing good about it. And stay away for Peugeot - overpriced by 10 grand
