I dont think its power people ultimately want. Imo, usually that desire for power is a means for some other purpose. Thats why alot of people who seek power and are successful in getting it (whatever its manifestation aka rank, influence, fame, etc) are usually very depressed since they have what they want yet remain unhappy, or are highly motivated towards achieving their identified purpose for said power. Just my 2 cents against the idea that power is a worthy goal by itself and the idea that everyone instinctively does persue it or should persue it.

Power is not making you formidable or swagger. It's more about the strategy. Like you stated, make you seem less intelligent in front of the boss sometimes can get you a promotion or more appreciation because your boss will think you are modest or humble. Soft is a power. But strong can also be a power. Strong doesn't mean physically strong. It means mentally strong. See clearly the situation and know exactly what are you doing are strong.
