Play The Game of Power

The game of power is a game of constant duplicity most resembling the power dynamic that existed in the scheming world of the old aristocratic court. These are the main lessons from the April chapter of my book "The Daily Laws".

Working at a dog grooming salon taught me a lot about power hierarchy. When the alpha is anxious, the entire pack is anxious. Being in a rock band taught me about the pecking order and how people will unconsciously scheme to undermine your success when you outshine them.

I volunteered as a tax aide. I have finished reading the 48 Laws of Power. A woman walked into our office using a walker plus she had an oxygen tank. I prepared her return. I noticed how long it took for her to sit down. I walked over to my boss (volunteer) to see if he could review and complete her return since her mobility was limited.

He asked me in a loud voice, “Are her legs broken?”. I said, “No”. He said, “Tell her to come to my desk”. She overheard our conversation. She gathered her walker and oxygen tank and walked over to his desk. He completed her return. She walked out of his office but stopped by my desk to thank me. That angered my boss since she did not thank him. Power games happen even in volunteer situations not just work situations.

This is SO spot on. I've been witnessing this since childhood. It's why as a musician I opt to be alone 99% of the time

Man, I've said this before. I wish this book had been published back in the late '70s or early'80s, when I was a young adult. None of the 48 Laws was taught anywhere. Instead, you had to learn the lessons, but doing so always left you in a state of confusion and cognitive dissonance, because the laws contradicted what was taught and generally accepted: "honesty is the best policy, " "just be yourself in all situations, " "strive to be a high achiever and don't care what anyone else thinks, " "show off your talent with pride" "good things come to those who work hard" and on and on. This book has everything that I needed to learn but was not taught. Better late than never.

Any man who tries to be good all the time is bound to come to ruin amongst the great number who are not good. Hence a prince who wants to keep his authority must learn how not to be good and use that knowledge or refrain from using it as necessity demands.
-Niccolo Machiavelli

As a human being I’m grateful for your existence, the fact that you do what you do.

Your book 48 laws of power helped me to understand that I was brainwashed by the propaganda, it destroyed all of my beliefs that I had before. In that destruction I was freed and my eyes were opened. So I thank you for your work, your books have truly been life changing and practically useful to navigate the current world.

Everything in life is about power. Relationships, work, parenting. Play the game or lose

I've never been that type of person myself, but have always been aware of it. I learnt over the years being someone who is straight up front and not playing the game that it is easy to identify a good leader from a bad one. The good leader tends to embrace the straight up honesty and the bad leader has no tolerance for it at all.

I really would love to hear more about PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE types in the workplace. There are SO many of them!

Really relieved of being retired from the practice of criminal law. 40 years went by real fast because I read Catch 22 when I was discharged from the Airforce and started university back in 1971. If you find the battle interesting and entertaining, you got to be crazy! I was never famous, but yes very successful.

Thank you for this talk Robert. This happens in families, especially blended families. So much of what happens today is just the same as thousands of years ago, the only difference is the outfits and faces we wear. Gale🙏

Being good in psychology has helped me deal with different kinds of people. I know who to avoid and who to approach. It's very helpful to be observant of other people's behavior. That's actually one of my hobbies. As an introvert, I am very observant of other people and how they interact with each other.

Feeling lucky that I'm watching you after having read all your books long years ago. I wish you health.

It's one thing to see this happening and avoid it as much as possible. It's another level to actively engage in it. Thanks for the video!

I've just brought 3 of your books to start. Human Nature, Laws of Power and Seduction. My entire being felt lifted just taking them out of the Waterstones paper bag and setting them down bedside. Can't wait to start reading tonight

Thank you, Robert. I read your book (48 Laws of Power) 10 years ago and I imbibed the lessons, thus, protecting me (practically looks like forever) from bullies. I didn't know back then that having traumatic brain injury will make you prone to bullying in a school set-up and in a working environment.

I always noticed this. People of today are no different than people from thousands of years ago. Human nature. Such a great point.
