I’m so happy to see someone mention The Twelve Kingdoms for once. It holds a special place in my heart.

Baccano is something you either need to watch twice or figure out during the first watch. Really interesting

Black Lagoon, while not underrated in my eyes, certainly deserves a lot of attention. It’s a relatively grounded show about a meek Japanese business man who gets kidnapped by a small group of pirates in South East Asia. He’s really just cog in a depressingly dull life that he sees drift further and further away. While he doesn’t live life to the fullest, it’s still a comfortingly familiar thing in a rapidly changing horizon. All the while his captors smile in the face of death.

There’s no shortage of absolute badasses, a relatively accurate portrayal of firearms, and my goodness are some of those weapons eye candy. I mean they even have a big ass fireball whenever this one dude fires his .44 magnum revolver. Oh and lots of “colorful” language, even the creator of the source material manga says to watch the dub, so please check that out. If you like hot/strong female characters who are strong because that’s who they are, and not just because they’re women, you’re gonna love this one. That’s not why I watch it but I can see the appeal lol.

If you liked Hellsing or Drifters and don’t mind something more grounded, it’s easy to recommend Black Lagoon.

Kino’s Journey (aka Kino No Tabi), specifically the 2003 version, has been my favorite since middle school! I was disappointed by the reboot, but it wasn’t all bad; still recommend the original however.

If you like an episodic format filled with traveling to different countries (really more like city states) and an examination of how people live through some uniquely fantastical ways of life, it’s a great show. The main characters don’t take too much of an active role, and character growth isn’t greatly explored. The main characters are mostly there to observe, allowing us viewers to focus in on the way others live their lives. Quite thought provoking with a very charming art style as well as style of direction, much in spite of some otherwise dated animation. I believe the director is the same one who worked on Serial Experiments Lain, although fortunately Kino is much easier to watch.

Edit: Made a separate comment.

Oh god, I rarely see, if at all, any mention of Twelve Kingdoms. The story and worldbuilding is such a masterpiece. I saw this anime as a kid and it left such an impression on me that whenever someone talks about worldbuilding and isekai, this is the first thing I think of. I can safely say that it's my absolute favourite story of all time, both the anime and the novel.

Although I’ve yet to finish Monster I really enjoy it! I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if it took the #1 spot in my book. The main antagonist is terrifying nearly every time he shows up. This is despite the fact that there are no superpowers nor supernatural encounters. I would say part of what makes him terrifying is due to how much he is able to accomplish as a (mostly) normal human being; somehow touted as one of the best villains of all anime & manga, some even say *the* best. I can’t tell just yet cause I haven’t finished lol.

The setting is also incredibly unique. I think it’s set in 1990s Germany after its reunification, still somewhat fresh at the time. I won’t spoil it here, but the protagonist struggles with a monumental dilemma that forces him to confront not only his morals, but truly who he has strived to be as a person. Almost as if his very fiber of being is challenged.
