Everytime is a little much if you change them every month or every other month. Depending on how much you play and how greasy your hands tend to be. Not a bad habit though. Not wiping your board down at least with a dry something will make your strings go bad faster from all the gunk built up.

1 VERY light coat per month is all you need

Yeah no don’t do this. I’m a luthier. It doesn’t clean anything and creates problems with the frets
