Cabin renovations with a new build (my first true solo construction project), climbing up my extremely steep a-frame cabin roof to sweep the chimney, preparing to grow more garlic in a new spot and making marshmallows from scratch! This week was an adrenaline rush in the best way.

A while back I had a chimney fire as well; The firefighter who extinguished the fire back then, advised me to install a stainless steel stove pipe that goes inside the chimney flue. He explained that this is the most reliable way to protect a wooden house from chimney fires. I decided to take his advice, installed one of these pipes, and purchased a set of chimney brushes specifically made for such stainless steel inner chimney stove pipes. The brush compartments click onto one another in a similar way to the ones you use now, but have a safety screw thread in both directions, so that the brush parts cannot become undone while sweeping. This type of chimney brush is typically used downstairs at the location of your fire place, rather than up on the roof. All materials for this system, brush set included, only cost me about 500 euros, and the stainless steel stove pipe turned out to be super-easy to install! I´d definitely recommend this solution, as I am now completely independent from chimney sweepers, and will be able to sweep my own chimney at an older age too, when I don´t feel brave enough to climb up my own roof anymore. Thought I´d share, just in case 🙂

Hey! I spend a lot of time building alone. Clamps are my best friends!!! When you are struggling to hold up a long length of wood you can clamp onto the post just underneath where you want the wood to sit and the clamp becomes the support shelf for holding up the wood while you adjust the length and screw in at the other end. It's so useful I use this trick all the time. Great shed. Small builds like that are very enjoyable.

It's amazing how being fearful of tackling something new can stop us in our tracks. Be proud, you did an amazing job!

The work you do on here is amazing Ally. I remember I learned from you that garlic is planted in autumn and back in march (I live in South Africa) I finally attempted growing garlic and now I have 20 bulbs hanging in my shed!! Thank you much 😢❤❤❤

Girl! So inspiring! I make Youtube videos in a similar spirit as you about my life in the remote West and I'm just always so inspired by the landscape where you live (so different than here) and how you show up to do so many interesting and skilful things (even when you are scared to do them). Marshmallow is such a beautiful and amazing medicine, I totally understand your fascination. Mine this year is Osha root, which generally grows in high elevations here in the Rocky Mountains. Thank you for sharing the beauty and story of this life you're living - sending love from my little corner of the world to yours ♡

Great job on the wood shed! I hope your garlic grows well. Maybe there’s a wood splitter in your future? Would be a great time saver. Really enjoyed your video Ally!

Meant to comment a couple of weeks ago that here in NW Ohio we finally got some color to the leaves. And like there in New England, the trees are becoming more and more bare each day. The color never seems to last as long as I would like. I am grateful that you share your vulnerable moments as it helps me to look at the scary things I need to do a little bit different. Step by step and being gentle with yourself. Blessings to you and Kyle.

Way to go Ally! The woodshed looks great. The whole video was so good with the garlic and marshmallow and of course being up on that steep roof cleaning the chimney!
Really impressed. 👍
