What is the situation on the popular Greek island? | DW News

Greek authorities have declared a state of emergency, after the most powerful earthquake so far shook the island of Santorini. An unprecedented wave of tremors has forced nearly all residents and tourists to leave and officials are warning of a high risk of landslides. Santorini sits on top of a volcano. The last major eruption was in 1950. But experts say the recent tremors are not related to volcanic activity but to tectonic plate movements.

I know Greece is not Iceland, but in Nov. 2023 there were thousands of small earthquakes and the volcano blew up in Dec. and it hasn’t stopped since, eruptions every two and three months, these earthquakes in Santorini looked very familiar, we pray that it is only quakes and no eruption !

It may be for the better that there are many smaller quakes. Better to release pent up energy that way than in one big jolt.
