NEW BRITISH ATTACK SUBMARINE UNVEILED
Показать описание
The battleship name Anson has been given to the latest - and fifth - Astute Class submarine for the Royal Navy. A nuclear-powered undersea capital ship, HMS Anson was christened with a bottle of cider being smashed against her hull.
The last Anson was a 35,000 tons King George V Class battleship of WW2, which possessed a principal armament of ten 14-inch guns and had a complement of up to 2,000 strong during war-time.
The new Anson has a crew of 98 and is armed with Tomahawk Land Attack Cruise Missiles (TLAM) capable off striking up to 1,000 miles inland, along with Spearfish heavyweight anti-surface/anti-submarine torpedoes.
The 97 metres-long, 7,400 tonnes displacement submarine will, according to builder BAE Systems, be launched into the water at their Barrow-in-Furness yard, in the northwest of England, in early 2021. Sea trials are scheduled for 2022.
The new Anson's ship's sponsor - Julie Weale, wife of Rear Admiral John Weale, who recently retired from the Royal Navy as Head of Submarine Service and Flag Officer Scotland and North Ireland - carried out the naming honours. The Venerable Martyn Gough QHC, Chaplain of the Fleet and Archdeacon for the Royal Navy provided the blessing.
“This is the first submarine to bear the name HMS Anson," explained Ian Booth, Chief Executive of the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) after the naming ceremony. "This is the eighth naval vessel to carry the title with a rich history spanning several hundred years. I am certain the new Anson will carry on that heritage well into the future as she joins a world-beating, cutting-edge submarine fleet that is of strategic importance to the UK’s security and prosperity.”
The name Anson honours Admiral of the Fleet George Anson, one of the Royal Navy’ top admirals in the 18th Century. He joined the Navy at the age of 15 and during his long career commanded six ships, circumnavigating the globe in the 1740s and also fighting both France and Spain. A reformer, Anson restructured the Royal Navy, tightened discipline, improved medical care, introduced uniforms and transferred the Marines from the Army to the Navy.
