Australia is set to buy at least three US-manufactured nuclear submarines at a cost of $245bn.
That could eventually increase to five submarines amid growing concern about China's influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
The announcement came as US President Joe Biden hosted the prime ministers of Australia and the UK in California.

Al Jazeera's John Hendren reports from Naval Base Point Loma in San Diego, US.

All Australians can sleep well tonight knowing that these boats will protect us in 20 years.

Interesting that Australia will be building a hi-tech nuclear sub in country. It will strengthen their industry in a positive way. Way to go Australia!

Australia has the right to upgrade its submarines. The new Aussie subs are only 'nuclear powered' and will never carry nuclear weapons because nuclear weapons are banned in it's constitution. The rest of the world should follow Australia's example and ban nuclear weapons from their submarines also. A new treaty banning nuke weapons on subs around the world is a great idea.

This could easily fall flat in Australia as a future government rescinds this.

China is too valuable to Australia (and 125 other countries in the world) for it to keep playing these foolish American "containment" games.

The next coming bank failure in the US will cause a lot of countries to re-think their loyalties to the US. It will take the US down another notch and Asia up another one.

hahaha I'm waiting through what waters the submarine will operate and maybe for the ASEAN region where there is already an agreement between 10 member countries for a nuclear-free zone and if Australia is determined to enter I think in the near future there will be an Australian ambassador who will be expelled from a certain country in asean maybe the option is through the waters of fiji or solomon island which actually also has resistance from france this will be interesting and actually i was very surprised by china's reaction before the arrival of this submarine, actually china is reconciling Iran-Saudi Arabia and in the near future there may be a proposal to Russia-Ukraine, but I don't know, AUKUS members are actually on fire because their hegemony is starting to fade, especially when England is surprised that its currency has dropped dramatically

AU and China radio relationship just flushed down the toilet. US and UK relationship with China is getting worse. Next time China will not help with bank bailout.

The AUKUS deal, which was snatched from France (and indirectly from the EU) comes in a time when Japan (East China Sea, North East from China) unveilied its largest military build-up (worth $320 billion). Furtermore, the Philippines (South Chinese Sea, South East from China) announced the expansion of sea patrols, in cooperationwith the US and Austrialia. The frontier against China is tightening and in order to keep the 'Balance of Power', China is obligated to build more (sophisticated) submarines. Any further escalation of this light version of the Naval Arms Race could endanger international trade. But perhaps I am over exaggerating....
