Buying food from the trolleys on the Shinkansen is the closest I’ve felt to Harry Potter

It's most likely just how the MRE is. You pull the string to release water and it mixes with the heating element to cause steam. While MRE there is no string you just open the bag fill water to a line. The water reacts with the heating element and just put your food in that same bag. Basicly same concept.

As a Japanese, I'll say this:

Bento on Shinkansen is what I consider an essential part of the experience.

Unfortunately if you're sensitive to smells in confined space like I am, it sucks.
I end up wearing a mask regardless of covid or allergy season because I unfortunately get nauseous smelling other people's bento 😢

I love the Shinkansen so much, its comfortable, relatively cheap, fast and also incredibly on time. I was in Japan just a few days ago for 16 days so i had the rail pass for a week and it was a dream being able to take the train just like that. If it werent for the hardcore work culture, i would definitely love to live in Japan

Japan is so advanced with everything. All of their food products and designs are superb. I wish we had things like that available in the US.

That same technology has been used in MREs (military meals) for years! Very efficient and I was also amazed the first time I tried it lol

Lived here for years and did not know this. Every time I think I know everything about this country something new comes along to blow my mind 😅

Those look AMAZING! and somfresh as well. They must be put together on a daily basis to be sold. I wish we had things like that in the USA.

Oh! China has these boxes too. The one I came across is from a hotpot chain called Hai Di Lao. Instead of string, you're instructed to place water into a cavity with a sachet that causes an exothermic reaction. It's really fun to use.

It’s so intriguing how Japan exists from the future but now here with the rest of us. Pretty neat!

Anybody else immediately think of Cowboy Bebop? That pull string instant ramen cup was always a fantasy as a kid.
