Keeping the Attention of Very Young Learners

Very young learners often have short attention spans, and can be easily distracted. It's important to fill every moment of the class with an engaging activity to keep them active and motivated. Here's a great tip from Joan for keeping your students' attention when a classmate is talking.

I have another suggestion. Instead of using talking stick, a talking chair can be also applied to an assembly for young learners. In the beginning, you can use the talking chair to create awareness that the student, who sits on the chair, can talk or to share their thoughts.

My only concern with that is that little kids might be like "Ooh, a stick!" and start waving it around and pretending like it's a sword. I might try using this in my classes, but knowing my kids, they'd pretend it was a sword or something and get even more distracted, so I'd probably use some other kind of cue, like a photo of a mouth or something.
