Erebus: The Primordial God of Darkness - WILD Greek Mythology

Today we learn about Erebus the primordial God of darkness. As one of the first Gods and brother to Gaia, Tartarus, and Nyx, Erebus had an important role on the myths of Greek Mythology as father to Aether and Hemera. One version of the myth even makes him father to Thanatos the God of Death, Eris the Goddess of Discord, and the Moirai, the three Fates.

As a nyctophile, I find it a pity that so little of Erebus (or even Nyx) is shown in popular media. And hell, I think this is the most that any YouTube video has ever had to say about him in the mythology. Thanks for this.

Interesting that he wasn't portrayed as some evil deity wrecking havoc. He just sounds scary because he is the reflection of people's fear in darkness, mist and shadows. Basically, anything in the dark that gives that ominous feeling of the unknown.

Great video, I remember once hearing a story that part of the reason Erebus/Erebos makes up the upper parts of the underworld (the parts that aren't Tartarus) was to keep Tartarus and Gia separated so they could no longer have any more children after Typhon and the Giants. Can't remember where I saw this story but it was a long time ago and no it wasn't associated with Percy Jackson. While I've always been a huge fan of Greek mythology that books series only recently garnered my interest and from what I know Erebus is only mentioned in passing once.

I guess i may have been a bit redundant when I created my children. Nyx and Erebus where always a handful. Eros was always around. practical to have them you you just come into absolutely nothing but empty space and 2 other brothers who started a war as soon as they could

I don't know why people keep getting this wrong but Eros Gaia and Tartarus are grandchildren of Nyx and Erebus
