I know this conflicts with all the advice but I leave the flower stems on until March - they harden up during winter and I am rewarded with regular visits from goldfinches during cold weather. One year I counted 24 goldfinch in a 2m stretch of hedging! To see them gripping onto the flower stems while stripping seed is a winter delight. I prune in march cutting into old wood(!) and I get compact densely flowering shrubs in July. I have been doing this on the same plants for over 40 years.

On paper (South Eastern Australia) I have the perfect growing conditions BUT I have lost 60 x Lavendula 'Grosso' plants. Today I took delivery of another 20 (never say die) in 50mm pots which I have potted on into 100mm pots and will see how they go. Not sure whether I should keep them in pots or risk another planting in 2 or 3 months in summer.

You didn't actually show us how to grow it from seed ie when to sow, outdoors or indoors etc?
