As an older gen z (26y), I have grown out of that era when watching makeup haul made me excited. Now it's simply that if I finish anything, I will go try and grab a new one. We are really bombarded with ads everywhere, and I basically unfollow influencers everywhere, knowing they are doing their job having a huge digital billboard of products.
I love pre-loved items. My last iPhone lasted 5 years. My laptop has been with me for 9 years. And it is just pretty satisfactory to live with those familiar babies I own. I am grateful.

I agree with you when you say, "Everyone has THEIR thing." I think anytime the discussion is fashion, people too often choose to be judmental and dismiss it as simply materialistic instead of a mode of self-expression. I have a collection of currated wardrobe items because I've been collecting since my first real job. However, the money I spend on my wardrobe isn't anywhere near what the average person spends on monthly car payments because I make sure to drive a paid for car. They spend big on cars, but for me a car is to get me from point A to point B. I present myself through words, actions, and visuals, and fashion is my visual expression.

Where I am from (south east asia), plastic waste or waste in general is in a really bad situation and for the rivers/ land. Having this underconsumption trend isn't a bad thing as it may help to 'slow down' the accumulation of waste...until someone develops a bacteria that can truly breakdown all plastic.

True. Everyone has their thing.
Mine are bags, practical shoes, skincare, fragrance, sunglasses and cookware.😊

You actually have a well curated collection. It's not over the top. I love it.

OK the underconsumption mode I would like to see in the USA is everyone eating their food before it gets moldy even if that means buying less food at a time and having to walk to the food stores more often. I'm invoking the buy less food at a time and taking more walks to the store aka the buylesscore.

I've always love worn in looks. It just feels so warm and personal to know someone has truly lived in something. I don't even like to make my bed because it looks sterile to me, like a hotel room. I hope we stick to conscious consuming and only buy what we need and want and stop trying to fill our lives with consumer goods that don't make us happy just for a kick of dopamine.

I feel like I take trends more with a grain of salt, because I saw them all in their previous iterations 😅 a decade or two ago. Like the Miu Miu and Balenciaga worn in bag trend, that was around in 2005 ish with Miu Miu bags, Balenciaga city, the Chloe paddington etc. and here it is 20 years later! Maybe the trend is back because of the high cost of living impacting gen z.

Great and thoughtful video, Mary! ❤ I love that you said you will wear the same pair of sneakers over and over… I’m the same way and if I accumulate too many it feels odd to me. Also like the quote from Charli XCX because it reminds us that there is something to having a signature look, uniform type of dressing. I feel like it can make someone more memorable.

underconsumption cose is also just being working class lol. Have you heard of incluenceation? It's influencing and inflation combined, I think coined by a substack writer for the newsletter midiminalism. It's the idea that as influencers become more successful they have more money/higher value sponsorships and increase their consumption (both things in general and luxury items). As a millennial I've felt that race with influencers I've been watching since high school and feeling like I should buy XYZ luxury brand because I'm at that stage in life and also just mindlessly buying things that are good products but I don't NEED, and upon further reflection I don't even want. Great video and good on gen X for not getting sucked down the rabbit hole of overconsuption

Such a great video! I am with you in terms of buying and saving up for something you really like and enjoying it as long as possible! Quality vs quantity. ❤

Hi Mary, totally with you. I am all about freedom, uniqueness. Being your own, and not a follower… I don’t like all these agendas, - Do these, all fair mongering ( global warming …., ) just jumping hoops… I am all about what it feels right to me. And finding your own style, and comfort. You know, since I switched my style, and started focusing, on building my own unique closet, I do not watch those big influencer, - empty, pushing every brand videos… but I also against other side be minimalistic, … how about be yourself, be one or another, or somewhere in the middle, or on something else, …. I enjoy watching interesting, calm, stylish, giving me history, knowledge…, channels like yours, and Lela, and a few more. It’s just feels peaceful and genuine, to me.. And yes, if you like the row bags, that’s what you like, and you shouldn’t apologize for what you like. Have a blessed day🙏❤️

I have always considered you to be an under consumer. You study what you want, shop carefully and purchase things that wont be in a landfill in six months or even six years. Personally, I wouldnt drop 4-5 grand on the Margaux bag or a delicious cashmere coat, but I do appreciate them.

I also dislike overconsumption, I find it being a problem in terms of constantly wanting to buy new cups and water bottles. I tend to stay off TikTok, unless I’m looking for something specific. I love the idea of underconsumption since having too much Material items for me makes me feel a lack of control in my life. I want to buy less, better quality, and use more.

It's good to see Gen Z catch on to the sustainability movement that has been going on for decades. Let's just hope that this "trend" becomes integrated for good into a way of being for them as it has for previous generations. You can't just do it for the Gram, it has to be for real.
Mary, as a Millenial, I respect your love of coats & handbags.

Yes I love getting GREAT use out of quality things and appreciating them more, as opposed to having too many extra variations of things, like shoes, etc. Seeing people collect pointless amounts of "sneakers" has always been so annoying and confusing

Is there such a thing as “normal”?! Do what makes you happy. You don’t need to justify yourself to anyone.

Hello dear how are you. Thank you for the clip. The subject refers to a culture that is not ours. I believe it is reflected to USA mostly and middle to Europe and China. (Asia is another story). I don’t believe in generalizations fashion or vibe. Do what makes you happy with conscience. Do not fall in debt no matter what. Try as hard as you can. That’s the only advice I have. Remember “time flow as a river and history repeats”. And I agree with luxury brands under four families is a kind of monopoly in a way. Lvhm, Gucci group richmond, etc conglomerate.

Oh my goodness… me watching all of the TikTok clips you included like…. Ummm isn’t this normal?!?! Leave it to GenZ to make a trend from everyday things 🤣 honestly more power to them 🙏🏼🙈🤣
At the heart of it, even though I sometimes get frustrated with the “sensational mindset” that goes into a lot of trends, it’s good hearted. At the end of the day I guess it’s still creating positive motion towards sustainability so I’m here for that 🙏🏼
