Secret communications and miscommunications which played out between the White House and the Kremlin made the crisis a unique event.

One one ever talks about the true hero behind the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vasili Arkhipov, a political officer aboard a submerged submarine carrying nuclear armaments to Cuba that lost communications after being struck by a depth charge; the sub commander believed that the war had begun, and being unable to confirm, made the decision to ready his misses for launch and was only prevented from starting the desolation of the known world by this one man: Vasili Arkhipov.

Interestingly the White House and the Kremlin were using letters and telegrams to communicate over the crisis. Only afterwards did the telephone hotline come about, making communications between the two super powers faster.

Problems with this video:

1. Didn't mention that Kruschev placed the missles in response to U.S. having missles in Turkey, as well as the Cuba's desire to have a deterant against the U.S. invading Cuba, as they had attempted at The Bay of Pigs.

2. Didn't mention that the US did not follow through with removing the missles in Turkey.

3. Didn't mention that US destroyers depth charged Soviet sub B-59 to force them to surface and that, if it were not for the veto of one senior officer, the sub was going to launch nuclear tipped torpedoes at the Blockade, thinking that the depth charges were a signal that war broken out.

Overall, this video white washes US culpability in creating the crisis and the fact that the US almost destroyed the world.

My father was in Army basic training during the Cuban Missile Crisis. They had their weapons training and were told if things kick off with Russia they could be skip the rest of their training to be put on the front lines. They figured all they really needed was knowing how to use their weapons and a little fire and maneuver training.

hey, great videos guys, just one small thing: the Russian deployment of their nuclear capabilities had come only after the US deployed theirs in Turkey. In fact in the agreement that was signed states that the US will withdraw their nuclear weapons from Turkey, who objected, stating that they will be vulnerable to the ambitions of the Soviets. it was done nevertheless, so i think its a very important detail when describing the cuban missile crisis.

Pronunciation of "nuclear" simplified: "nu" + "clear"

Otherwise loved this simple, clear explanation of a complicated situation. Thank you!

That one man who declined the launch is a literally real hero of the world. He saved billions and a whole planet of life from dying.
