Sometimes, the bravest people are the ones who _didn't_ start a war

Its a shame that so little people know this man who possibly saved Humanity from annihilation

Good short. I'd love to hear you guys talk about Stanislav Petrov one day. He faced a similar choice, but in arguably an even tougher scenario.

That man's name should be known to the world as the GREATEST HERO OF ALL TIMES. HE SINGLE HANDEDLY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SAVING THE LIVES OF EVERYONE WHO WAS BORN AFTER THE CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS. HE SAVED THE WORLD, & IS HISTORYS GREATEST UNKNOWN HERO

What's horrifying is that I know of at three such situations where a difficult but level-headed decision saved the world during the cold war, and there's probably more.

Lets just hope this video never needs to be renamed to “delayed”

You could also tell the story about Stanislaw Petrow who decided against nuclear retalition in September 1983, when his nuclear missile warnsystem falsely warned his station about a nuclear missile strike from US soil.

Thanks a lot for your awesome and informative series and shorts!

Not the only Russian whom, when everything indicated nuclear war, decided NOT to press that button.

Vasily Arkhipov is the greatest hero in the history of mankind and that is a fact

Even more unnerving is if I recall, normally Soviet submarines would only have 2 commanders on board, the captain and political officer. So the fact that Vasily was on board this particular submarine (B-59) at all was even more interesting as he was the chief of staff of the floatilla, and this could've happened to any of the other submarines which he wouldn't have been present on.

A real hero isn't the most valiant warrior. A real hero is the one, who stops War from ever happening.

Even more chilling - usually you would only need the 2 votes (captain and commissar).. but since the admiral of the submarine flotilla happened to be on that sub, his vote was needed too.
