At our shop, we have a WPS that calls for downhill mig on pipe.

However, it takes a carefully set machine and a lot of technique to get the penetration required to pass a root bend test.

I ran MIG downhill in a fab shop welding up spools for the field that went into a hospital in Escondido, CA(San Diego county). It was fast and easy.

I run mig downhill where I work. I always clean the inside of the pipe prior to fit. I noticed in this video that you didn't do that. Do you ever worry about porosity when you don't clean the inside?

I did downhill mig welding for years in the hvac field. Building gas heat units, anti-vibe adapters, etc where the welds are completely vertical. Definitely take a good eye and control over your bead.
