Hey, everyone! I wanted to create a free public course for first-time fish keepers. I would really appreciate it if you could share it with someone who is getting their first fish tank to provide them with some assistance.

Good to see you getting back to uploading James. It's crazy how bad traditonal takes on keeping Bettas are so I'm glad to see better advice. Always good to see someone who cares about the animals and the owners.

Hi, just wanted to say that this was very well done and informative. However, I think you accidentally mixed up nitrites and nitrates when discussing the nitrogen cycle. Ammonia from waste turns into nitrites first and then nitrates are the final product of the cycle. In your video, you said ammonia turns into nitrates, then nitrites. Nitrites are what's considered harmful to fish. Nitrates indicate that a tank is fully cycled and although it could cause harm in large amounts (exactly why we do water changes), there should be some present in the tank. Again, the video is very well made, but I just wanted to point out the mistake just in case it was accidental.

Fluval stratum is just okay when it comes to substrate. Organic potting soil with a sand cap is a far superior substrate for aquarium plants. I recommend never using your bare hands with your fish. They can damage their slime coat which can cause fish to become very susceptible to disease.
