I've just spent a few hours totally baffled as to why I could not make animation key-frames work (manually adding them and adjusting transform properties would not register), and the culprit was the little "Auto key-frames" button next to the timeline controls. Thank you, but I would like to know why having that unchecked caused such a problem. UPDATE: Just unchecked "auto keyframes" and tried to animate again, and this time it worked. Starting to think Blender is bit buggy.

Hey I was wondering, on the same drop down for auto key, there is a second option "Layered Recording". Do you know how to use it, or what its for? Can't figure it out. The manual says that this feature, "Adds a new NLA track and strip for every loop/pass made over the animation to allow non-destructive tweaking". Enabling this, I tried animating frame by frame and adding new grease pencil strokes, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything for me. What am I missing?

My window where you click the auto keyframe dissapeared now it only shows the timeline.

Nice one thanks mate. I'm trying to get my head around blenders animation system coming from Maya. With the auto key switched on in Maya it would set a key only if an object already had a key on it first. This would stop everything from being keyed in the scene automatically, especially if you rotated your camera or moved a light. Is there a way of keeping auto key on and have it add keys only to an existing animated object?

shouldn’t autokey only set keys on animated channels?

eyo im working on the free rigged character from the blender website rainv2 or something.
my issue with the auto keying is that if i dont do anything with a part of the model say her ankles i didnt rotate on frame 0 but then i rotate it on a later frame, say 7. The auto keying will make a rotation keyframe on fame 7, as it should but on frame one the ankle have the same rotation as on frame 7 and without a keyframe on it. same thing with the feet position and rotation all of these i need to make a seperate frame-0 keyframe so that the later keys dont override that.
