I watched this video as a native born English speaker. I found it very interesting...how did I manage to grow up instinctively picking all this up before I was even five years old? I have never studied a foreign language and now I can see there's more to learning one than remembering the vocabulary words! I want to thank all the people who are learning to speak English as a new language and are going through the trouble of pronouncing it in a way that can be understood properly. I have gotten frustrated before when people spoke it badly and from now on I will have more patience.

The best teacher i have ever seen on youtube . Number one in the world. Respect from University Moroccan English studens. "S5" linguistics studies this year if God wants that. I have been following you since I was in high school "5 years ago" and by the end of 2021 I will have graduated from the university if God willing.

In the sentence "I slept well last night", you pronounced "last" with a stopped t. Maybe, there is a stronger rule: a t follow by an n is pronounced as a stopped t. Thanks Rachel for your awesome videos!

If you are comfortable with how to make each sound, just make them individually with breaks in-between. Think about what you have to change about the mouth position to go from one sound to the next. Then break it down and practice single transitions, like T to R or R to OO. Do these over and over to train your muscles. Then slowly put the whole word together, and eventually speed it up.
Best,
Rachel

My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. Thanks to the author of the channel for this interesting video! Good luck to everyone who studies a foreign
language and wants to realize their full potential!

Thanks for the videos, Rachel. For those whose native languages have a trilled "R" sound, I've noticed when learning the American "R" in words like "water" and "later" that it is exactly like the trilled "R" sound (but don't trill it more than once). I hope this helps.

@Clepsidra16 Hi - good question. Yes, as a stand alone word, 'was' would be [wʌz] or [wəz]. Because it is linking to a word that begins with an S however, the unvoiced version of the z sound, the Z just gets turned into and S sound in everyday speech, which is quite fast. You won't hear the s as a separate sound, you will just hear it as the S in sent.

It follows the rule for an ending T: it will usually be pronounced as a stop T --- unless the next word begins with a vowel/diphthong ("eight in the morning"), in which case it will be a flap T/

@paulohlcoelho There is a secondary stress on the TUDE syllable, so it would be attiTude. :) Good question.

@cecygerardway I've not heard it pronounced as a D in these situations, but it is pretty common to leave the T out in words like twenty, center, interview. I have a video on the numbers 11-20 that goes over that pronunciation.
