Hi all,
In this video I go over my experience building and using a Steam Console.

Useful information about the build:
OS: HoloISO by Vakhovske
CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X
GPU: AMD RX6600XT
Motherboard: ASRock A520M-ITX/AC

Best part is that this is all running on a linux-based system, like the deck. Hopefully more and more people start looking at Linux the way it deserves instead of "that's not gonna play my games"

Good video. I would like to build a machine with actual Steam OS, but its hard to think of a reason to when Steam Big Picture mode exists. All the benefits of a Windows desktop, all game compatibility (some games don't work on the Steam Deck due to Anti Cheat implementations), can wake from sleep by turning on controller, etc...Big Picture Mode isnt as fleshed out as Steam OS itself but everything the average user would need is there.

I want to transition my built to Linux SO BADLY, but there are still just a few nagging issues that hold me back—my NVIDIA 3080 12 GB GPU and HDR support for my 65” 4K TV being the biggest hold-ups right now. Bazzite—a Fedora 38 build with gaming centric customizations to match SteamOS with some added features—solves the first problem well enough, though Steam’s Gamescope compositor still doesn’t work with NVIDIA GPUs, so it’s technically a Gnome desktop running Steam in Big Picture mode. So as I wait for my final pieces of the puzzle to dump Windows 10, I went ahead and installed Retrobat to easily configure EmulationStation, emulators, ROMS, and Windows shortcuts. I then swapped out my shell from Windows Explorer to EmulationStation, so I boot directly into the game UI without all the other Windows shell overhead sort of like SteamOS does in gaming mode. While it’s more work to make changes (I have to load Windows Explorer from Emulation Station, not a big deal), it makes me forget that I’m on Windows. And with Special K, I avoid the crappy HDR support baked into Windows, as well as having access to any frame limiters and tweaks that I may need. Great perspective, though, building an AMD machine definitely makes going SteamOS or even Bazzite a no-brainer for a gaming console. You get all the perks of PC gaming AND console gaming AND your Steam library—win-win-win!

can you wake your system up using just your controller?

Subscription scams is what made me not even bother with the new gen of scam machines, and with the actual Steam Deck, and the Steam OS as I use it on my main PC as well, it's hard to believe someone would subject themselves to Sony or Microsoft scams

Valve has officially said that steam os is coming to desktop pc. We just don’t know when. I tried haloISO (like year ago)while back on my 2700x/16GB/GTX 1080ti and it was horrible. Steam os UI and menu did not work correctly with Nvidia GTX hardware. Start menu often wouldn’t even pop up. And I got random freeze and crashed. So i suspect at time it was due poor Nvidia drivers.

If your running all AMD system then you’ll be fine. But if you have Nvidia gpu. Forget about running haloiso. There been rumors already popping up that Valve is working on steam os console like box. As of late sept/2023. So if we ever see this steam console box. I hope by then driver support is better for Nvidia gpu users.
