I've learned that the reason why some people struggle with Vallisneria, is down to water chemistry. Specifically, a lack of calcium in the water. One thing I've found that works is to put a small seashell somewhere in the tank where it can't be seen. Did it once and the vallis took over the tank.

That is a great and easy setup. Very simple yet effective. You should give a breakdown of the cost of plants as well specially for someone starting up. Another great job.

I've been using peace lilllie's and other plants like sweet potato, carrot tops, etc, for years. They make the best filtration ever. I have never used any electric filters in my aquariums for years. Just a small power head or air stone near the heater to make sure the warm water circulates around the aquarium.
Obviously I wouldn't keep large cichlids in this type of aquarium, but tetra's and dwarf cichlids absolutely love this type of set up.
