Great video Dan, good to know that the whole tree is going to be used and NOT because you took some bark off but because you are consistantly using the resources around you God provided out in the forest, its there to be used. Really loved that bark basket video you did as well. Till next video buddy, Warren.

Cedar bark shavings are awesome also even if wet the oil in cedar is very flamable

Taking the bark from a live tree like you did (without destroying the cambium) will not kill the tree, it will look rather unsightly when it blackens, and stands out like dogs balls, and the bark will not regrow but I'm pretty sure the tree will survive... unless you perhaps you peel the whole tree... but hey like you said you will be taking that tree anyway... no biggie. Birch also can be coppiced and often grows back readily (many shoots) after being cut. I love this tree! Cheers

If I can't find cedar, I'll look for dried bark, pound it a little with a rock to split the fibers, add some dried fluffy plant material and it works almost as well as Vaseline cotton balls.

It won't kill the tree every time. I have birch trees on my property where I pulled the bark and it only left a black scar on the tree trunk, the tree is alive an well.

Pacific Northwest. No birch. We have to work a lot harder at getting fires going up here. LOL just kidding, we've got plenty of good materials up here to get 'er done easy.

FYAH!!! I'm sure in a emergency/survival situation, taking bark from a live tree is acceptable (?)

What kind of knife were you using I have never seen a "sheepsfoot" type woods knife before. Very cool also looked like it had a bit of a "hawkbill" feature to it as well.

Ok, Dan... where did the new knife come from?!?

Removing bark from a life tree only kills it when you remove it all the way around.

I'm no "Woodsman" So forgive me if my comment is somewhat stupid, Can you not scrape and save the outer bark in situe without killing the birch tree?

Hylanda

Wow a small section removed kills the whole tree? Even large birch trees?

O MAN now people are going to imitate Dan and a shit load of Birch trees will die ; darn it, please insist on telling them not to do it unless in a real survival situation after all preserve it even when it is plentiful
