Silver Birch. The Fire Tree. One Minute ID

Silver Birch. The Fire Tree. I visit a young National Forest woodland to look at one of my favourite trees - the silver birch. It's a beautiful and distinctive tree, but these trees are under threat from grey squirrels. I trap the squirrels to protect the young trees from lasting damage - even death. The silver birch has a resinous bark and the translucent flakes that can be peeled off the tree trunk burn easily and, with just a spark, will ignite into a hot fire making this tree a firm favourite with bush crafters and survivalists as the tree of choice from which to create a fire.

One minute ID. Snippets from the English countryside in around one minute.

Amazing tree, and has so many uses and resources.
It's my favorite too.
Spring's starting to sprout, so it's nearly time to start tapping them 😊
Cheers Mick, muchly enjoyed like always.
Thanks
Andy

I have a lot of birch in my usual haunts... I use the bark very often to light my fires)) I rarely have to tap into a live birch as there are always some lying on the ground. You can even use the birch when it's wet and even half rotten. It's a bit harder to start a fire with it when it's not in mint condition but it still works fine. Thanks for sharing, mate))
