Welcome! My name is Phil, and in this video, I'll explain how exoplanets are named and if you get to name them.

When exoplanets are discovered, they receive a scientific designation resembling a code. This code’s first part refers to the host star, the catalog name, or the scientific instrument or project responsible for the discovery. The letter at the end of the code indicates the planet, with 'b' for the first planet, 'c' for the second, and 'd' for the third, and so on. It's important to note that these letters are assigned based on the order of discovery, not the planet's distance from its star.

Unfortunately, as a discoverer, you don't get to name the exoplanet, and it won't bear your name. However, if you want an astronomical object named after you, consider discovering a comet, as they often carry the discoverer's name!
