Why don't exoplanets have actual names?

Exoplanets are given names like Kepler-22 b, 55 Cancri e, 51 Pegasi b, and other bad names like that. Why don't we just give exoplanets actual names?

Check out How to Name an Exoplanet for a full list of all the rules for naming an exoplanet (there are a LOT)

So, what would you name an exoplanet?

I feel like all exoplanets deserve a unique name! When an exoplanet has a designation, and not an actual name, it can lead to confusion.

A similar sometimes happens to stars. For example: when Rigil Kentaurus and Toliman got their official names, not a lot of people used their new names and stuck with their designations (Alpha Centauri A and B).

I feel like exoplanets need a standardised nomenclature system like how we name organic chemical compounds

i’m all for naming stars and exoplanets as long as we just name TRAPPIST-1 “Trappist” because that’s a hard name

My dream to name a planet "Mickey mouse" will finally come to fruition.

I have a feeling us naming random objects names now will be the equivalent of ancient Greeks naming Africa "Libya" or the British calling the Us "Virginia". These mfight become ancient names for what future people consider "old fashioned".

I do kinda have a naming idea for trappist-1 planets using human names as it for some reason fits the planet's of that system specifically better.

(maybe we name Planet X as Juno the Goddess of Women, Marriage, and the state aka Rome.)

Also because theres 7 letters we can use that to name them after like in order so the list I made would be:
TRAPPIST-1B (Brooks)
TRAPPIST-1C (Cindy)
TRAPPIST-1D (Dominic)
TRAPPIST-1E (Emilia)
TRAPPIST-1F (Felix)
TRAPPIST-1G (Grace)
TRAPPIST-1H (Hunter)

We have an exoplanet called HAT-P-12b which was found by hungarian telescope system. It was named Puli and its star Komondor after the famous hungarian dog breeds.

Still don't get why it's not an annual competition, there's so many exoplanets

Maybe because we discovered too many exoplanets to the point where its easy to forget some of their names

I have never heard anyone call Betelgeise as Beetlejuice before

As a musician, I'd like an exoplanet called "Euterpe"... Maybe, I should take part to a competition by NameExoWorlds.

Pretty sure the IAU didn't name Betelgeuse. The Arabs named it that quite a while ago. Great video though. I love Kyplanet.
