Science in The Martian

The Martian was an awesome movie, but how realistic was the science? What would a human mission to Mars really be like? This video examines the science behind the movie in more depth, discussing examples like water, wind, pressure, spacesuits, spacecraft, and orbits.

I appreciate a sceptical comment on all matters. However, it is quite obvious that you haven't read the source, being the book. If you do that, and I highly recommend this, you will find several things you pointed out to be reasonable, within the constraints of this extreme situation.
The way he did some repair works was changed to fit it in the movie and make it understandable without complex explanation, some other parts e.g. the hydrazine sound crazy but it makes sense.

Great video, thanks, and now read the book :P

Andrew, I agree with the rest of the video, but the Hermes was a constantly accelerating craft, not a point-blank thrust craft, I'm pretty sure it could leave at any time, just some thoughts.

Love that clip he should jump there while walking because of one third of the Earth's gravitation.

the position you showed in the video are not the real positions of the planets by the time of the book if you do the math (and if you are doing this kind of videos you should) by the info on the book you can work out they used the Homan Transfer manouver in the launch window of 2035 which meant that they could have done the same manouver to return in a time window of almost 40 days since their arrival to mars which is why the evacuation an inmediate return could be done (the rescue manouver is a bit more complicated but also posible within the dates of the story)
